My new XSP-1 came today, very nice looking preamp.
I installed it in my 2 channel system which now consists of the XSP-1, 2 of the XPA-1L amps, JBL L220 speakers and 2 of the Ultra 12 subs. Sources are a Marantz CD6004 and Technics SL-1200MK5 with a Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge. The system is configured with the stereo subs and the JBL’s crossed at 50hz. Now for the sound, OMG!!! I am overwhelmed, very clean and if you want, very LOUD and still clean. I am a happy old man.

nice setup you make a lot of people jealous.. try crossing the subs at 100... cheers Thanks. I have a question about crossing at 100hz because the mains don't start to roll off until about 35hz. Wouldn't it be better to be closer to the range of the mains? I will try the 100hz crossover tonight and see what I think, thanks for your input.

I'd be curious to know as well as I have a pair of speaker that roll off around 35hz as well. I always feel like I'm wasting my speakers if I cross to high haha.

On this subject can I use the microphone that came with my XMC-1 and the sound card that is in my PC?

Good rule of thumb is somewhere in the 20-30 Hz above the -3dB area of the mains. I couldn't find the -3dB spec on your L220's but it has a strong 14" woofer and your 35Hz estimate is probably quite close (maybe in the 35-40Hz range. 50Hz might be just a hair low and you might go little higher and try 60-70Hz for the best blend.

I did some measurements with REW and the JBL's in my room are about 3db down at 32hz. I moved the crossover up 2 marks on the XSP-1 and balanced the subs, now the system is 3db down at 21hz. I think I will leave it alone and just listen to it. Thank you for your suggestion.

I agree. But try for yourself. Roll the crossover at 80 and roll at 70,60,50, and 40. Pick the sound you like best. For me 80 works best

Sounds like a nice setup. I have the JBL Studio 280's. I like them, but considering the SVS SB-1000. I think they could use a little help, especially at low volume, but I'm still on the fence as I live in a condo. Can somebody help a brotha out? Sorry not trying to hijack, just a fellow JBL fan.

I wish that I could help you with some suggestions on newer JBL's. My newest pair that I am using is 35 years old (L220) and the oldest is 46 years old (Alpha 70). I purchased my first JBL speakers in 1968 and have had a thing for them ever since. Perhaps someone else can comment on the newer JBL lines.
