Hello all,
I have a good friend who is ready to spend up to 1500 on a good single subwoofer. His current setup is strictly stereo, for movies and music. He has BW 805's as mains that are pretty flat in his room to 40HZ. He is looking for something that will blend well with his mains and dig deep below 20HZ in his room. His room is about 10' wide and 12' deep with 8' ceiling and an open stairwell on the right side that starts at the listening position (7 feet). The subwoofer will have to be 24" or less high for his projector screen as well. The subwoofer will ideally be placed along the front wall near the front right corner. He will be crossing the subwoofer over at about 50-60Hz. Lastly, he has the cherry finish BW's and would like to match them as well as possible.
He is keen on a sealed setup, but could go ported.
Currently looking at 15" Power Sound, Ryhtmic 15", etc...
I have some ideas, but any help would be suggested.
I also think a DIY build would be fun to do with him as well.
What would be the best DIY 15" sealed sub in the <$1000 range for total cost?
THX again, Ben

The new power sound audio sub lines are no brainers at that price point!

But he is not gonna want the industrial finish, do they offer the cherry cabinets on their new line?

I have not heard the psa subs But the rythmik is an AWESOME piece. He could build a small ported or sealed 18 also that would fit that size restriction, even the mach 5 ftw21 will do VERY well in a 24" cube. If he wants to keep the driver size smaller the Dayton ultimax is a fantastic driver.

I also have a sealed rythmik and like it . It's response is good up til 90hz but I don't think it was designed to play much higher.

I think my first step will be to bring over my DIY Dayton 18" and see how it performs for him in his space and limited placement options. Becuase he has a stereo preamp and dac rather then a Processor, i am not so sure how well we will be able to get the mains and sub in proper phase alignment, but I hope so.

PSA Subs have the XS30 in Cherry (two colors). $1500 in American Cherry for 1 Sub. www.powersoundaudio.com/products/xs30se?variant=705650461I just hooked up their newer 3000 subs and have compared them to the B&W 750 that I also have. Approximately the same size (3000/750), both are 17 inches high. Still burning in the PSA 3000 subs. Output seems comparable to the B&W 750, although the 3000 may go a bit lower in room. Both subs work well with the B&W 704 speakers, so should work well with the 805's. If he can find a used B&W 750 sub, the finish will match exactly.

Minidsp.... or an amp with dsp built in..

Having owned many subs and I too have 805s as part of my fronts, you will get the best blend with a Martin Logan sub. They are the most customizable sub on the market and provide a quick, rich, deep bass. I currently utilize two Descent subs in my home theater and they work great. So good in fact that I use no room correction as all my adjustments are made on the subs directly. For $1500, your friend is looking at a used Descent i (which has three drivers), or two Grotto subs. Tell him to go down Fry's if wants to hear them, then find one on eBay or Cragislist. They also come in the cherry finish to match the 805's.
If not Martin Logan, then look at SVS as an alternative. He can try it out for 30 days and they will pay the return shipping.

I think the lesson learned here is everyone likes something different. There are at least a dozen manufacturers who make high quality subs. Choose the one you like based on needs and budget. Sometimes there is just not one right answer, there can be many as this is all so subjective.

I hear you on the industrial look. Frankly I like what HSU, and SVS have been doing these last few years. Tremendous value for their given performance. Worth the listen, and look IMHO.
