An update: I received the Speakerpower SP2-8000 and SP1-4000 and got them mounted in the racks. I also received the Acoustic Elegance TD12Ms, the TD8Ms are still pending. The project expanded somewhat in a few ways: Addition #1: For years I have wanted to build a dedicated home server. While I was waiting for my speakers and amplifiers I figured it was a perfect time. I also decided that it would be a good time to update the mac mini. I love OSX for its simplicity but there are better options on the market for a HTPC IMHO. The Mac Mini's IR receiver is somewhat buggy. More importantly, OSX has an OS limitation that will not allow it to pass HD audio. this is frustrating as you can boot the same machine into Windows and run HD audio. However, when booting the Mac Mini into Windows you cannot use the IR receiver to run Kodi. this is super frustrating and led me to conclude it would be better to update my HTPC clients. I knew I needed to build a server anyway as I had maxed out the 4TB of hard drive space I could fit on my Mac Mini. Here is what I ended up building: Server: Supermicro 836TQ 16 bay chassisSanDisk Cruzer 16GB thumb drive (for FreeNAS OS) 5 x Noctua 80mm fans (I have read that converting the super micro cases to 120mm isn't really feasible but I wanted to get some fans that would be a bit more quiet) 2 x Noctua 40mm fans (so I can replace the very loud PSU fans in the Supermicro case) Noctua heatsink (probably overkill for my needs, but I got a really good deal on an open box item) Cheap samsung console monitorCheap console mouse and keyboardSupermicro X10SRL motherboardIntel Xeon E5 processor E5-16208 x HGST Deskstar NAS 6TB hard drives4 x Samsung 16GB 288-pin DDR4 ECC RAMA bunch of monoprice SATA cablesThe server rack: For the client machines I got: 2 x Intel NUC NUC5i5RYK2 x 16GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz memory2 x 120GB Kingston M.2 SATA SSD2 x refurbished Logitech K830 keyboard/trackpad combosI am running FreeNAS as the server OS. I am running Appleshare as a whole home time machine and a CIFS share as a whole home Windows backup. I have Emby running in a Jail to host files both locally and remotely (I donated the Mac Mini to my brother and he can access my entire server through Kodi running Emby). The other jail is running SABnzbd, Sickrage, Couchpotato, and Transmission. It is absolutely awesome! It was a steep learning curve getting everything setup, but it is working well. Client machines are running Windows 7 and Kodi with the Emby add-on. Emby is brilliant for those of you not familiar. It fully integrates into the Kodi library and keeps track of playcount/location for all media and syncs it across all devices. It does what mySQL does but is infinitely easier to setup. Oh, and its free .

Addition #2: I don't know why I never thought of this before, but in my living room, there are two built in cabinets. Above these built ins is an alcove that contains, basically, unusable space. I actually am so used to looking at the built ins I never really paid this area any attention. For some reason I was laying on the couch the other day and just happened to look at this area. The thought occurred to me: why not build some subwoofers in there? I posed the question to my wife and she is 100% on board (no floor space occupied by these woofers, can be reasonably blended into the existing cabinets in an aesthetically pleasing way). Here is the space, the red rectangles show where I will be building the subwoofer boxes: Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), I have 18 inches of vertical space in these areas. This will be too small to mount a box and my HST18s. So, I will be purchasing some HST15s to mount in there instead. I will need to assemble the boxes in situ so I will be building sealed boxes for this area. There is 12 cubic feet of space per alcove which, after driver and lumber displacement, will yield approximately 10 cubic feet of net internal volume. I will be able to bolt the box directly to the wall studs and cabinet top so I should be able to get away with one layer of 3/4" baltic birch for the outer box. I will still build some bracing into the box though, to support the baffle. The woofers model excellently in 5 cubic feet sealed so I will be using two HST15s per side, for a total of 4. This will yield more displacement than the two 18s but... I will still be using the pair of 18s . I was previously planning on putting them in ported boxes, but to make things simple I will build them into sealed end table boxes (near field). That means I need more power! So I ordered a second SP2-8000. One day I will get an additional pair of HST18s as well (for a total of 4). When I do this I will want the subs in two boxes in a dual opposed alignment. Because of this, I will likely build a single end table with both 18s I already have so in the future I can simply build a second end table rather than having to rebuild both of them.

Here are some pictures of the rack I assembled for the upstairs spare bedroom: You can see the SP1-4000 in the rack just above the UPA-700 UMC-200 and MiniDSP 10x10HD The rack tucks into the closet where I previously routed cables And, for the main living room, here is the SP2-8000 installed under the XPA-7

Very impressive system. And the best part is you're having fun putting it together. And dreaming of listening sessions when done, of course!
Great work......keep it up!

Nice setup. I don't know about subs at ceiling level though Good point, although the infinite baffle guys put subs in or near the ceiling frequently without any issue. I was more concerned with the corner loading than the proximity to the ceiling. We will see though, luckily between the XMC-1 and the MiniDSP I will have plenty of processing power to take down the subs if necessary.

Nice setup. I don't know about subs at ceiling level though I sent an email to Nick, the owner of Stereo Integrity, regarding this. Here was his response:

I haven't abandoned this project, just slowly preparing. The guys over at AVS are a bad influence because I purchased two more HST18 D2s so the low end in my main room will be handled by 4 HST15s and 4 HST18s. I completely redid the wiring in the upstairs spare bedroom. We have a new baby on the way and my wife wanted the bedroom I already wired to be the baby room. So, since she has already been awesome letting me do this in the first place, I took out the wiring I already did, repaired the walls, and moved everything to the room next door. This will actually be a better setup. I have more room and I will be able to locate the equipment on the other side of the wall in the baby's closet. I have also been somewhat delayed with this project as I have been setting up a woodshop in my garage. I will be using this for furniture building and speaker box construction. Now that I am getting this setup I should be making sawdust on these speakers pretty soon. I am still waiting for my AE TD8Ms. It has been 9 months since I placed the order and I still haven't received them! Here is what I am working with in the woodshop. Just took delivery of a bandsaw, table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, air compressor, and dust collector. A lot of setup in my future!

Ok, finally some progress to post. I finished the wiring upstairs. The spare bedroom is wired for 5.2 surround with the from LCR all with double runs of speaker wire so they can be run active. It was a lot of wiring but everything turned out nice if I do say so myself. I am still working on getting the shop setup then I will start building the speakers for upstairs. I will start with the HST11s, then the LCR, then the rears since I will need to build some passive crossovers for those I will do them last. The wiring is all throughout the guest bedroom into the closet of the room next door. You can see the boxes for all my subwoofers in that room.

More very nice work Trevor. But, you know you're itching to work on those speakers, right? I know I would be.....
Keep the updates coming....this is porn for me until my home theater project makes it to the top of my To Do list!
