I have not heard much out of the CW camp in some time. There are plenty of good sounding speakers in your price range if that was what you are expecting to pay. There are several Klipsch KLF-30's on the market for less money and they sound fantastic.

I agree in that Cerwin Vega are not some of the more accurate speakers. Given you want LOUD and AFFORDABLE I too would audition the KLIPSCH line

Does Klipsch still put out a quality speaker.I have been a little skeptical ever since they showed up at Best Buy.

The new RF-7 sounds amazing. www.klipsch.com/rf-7-ii-floorstanding-speaker/detailsYou can find several Ebay sellers, and some stereo shops selling these at dramatic discounts. The lines at Best Buy and such are the entry level wanna be lines. The upper echelon of the Reference II series and Heritage lines are fantastic.

If you've never heard Salk Song Towers you should. They are amazing. They don't need a sub. Those 2 5" drivers put out sound rivaling that of a sub. You can get them used also. I posted the specs below. FWIW I owned Emotiva ERT's for 6 years and found them very satisfying - except they need a sub IMO to round out the sound. With the song towers I have no need of a sub. Which is why I can get by with a receiver for great sound - no bass management needed since the song towers play so low. You can safely ignore the 42hz limitation - they play very well down into the low 30's. The ERTs also were speced to 42hz and could play lower but the song towers do it much better. I've heard sound from them that I've never heard from any other speaker I've ever owned. Anyone looking in the $2k area for speakers should give them a try. The one thing that I'm reminded of each time I cue up some tunes and listen to the ST's is how good the tweeter is - the ERT's were also very good - the Infinity IL-40's I owned for about 10 years before buying the ERT's also had a very good tweeter and is the same one Revel has used in their towers for their lower tier speakers. The OW2 tweeter is just a half step ahead of the others. Mid range is full an sweet too. A strong point for the ERT's - they just can not match the song towers in the very low frequencies. The Song Tower design came from Dennis Murphy - current owner of Philharmonic Audio fame who's speaker line is getting rave reviews. I don't know if he has any speakers that play as low as the song towers and don't need a sub. There is also a Salk Speaker owners thread over on AVS worth reading - lots of reviews. A guy named Nuance has a long thread documenting his search for the 'perfect' speaker - something we know does not exist. His journey led him to the Song Towers. ST Specs: Model spacer SongTower QWT spacer Design MTM 2-way Quarter Wave Tube Transmission Line Drivers (1) Hiquphon OW2 tweeter , (2) Seas ER15RLY midwoofers Response 42Hz - 20KHz (+/- 3db) Sensitivity (dB/2.83v/1M) 88db Impedance 4 ohms nominal 6 ohms average Recommended Amplification 30 - 150 tube watts 80 -250 solid state watts Box Alignment Quarter-wave transmission line Weight 49 pounds each (not including plinths and spikes) Dimensions (HWD) 44.5" H x 8" W x 12" D (not including plinths and spikes)

OK did I read that correctly? (2) 5" drivers do not require a sub? Is that even legal? I have seen others post about the Salks as well. I would need to hear them to buy into that one.

Just for grins, if you come across a used pair of Infinity SM150, 152, 155 in your area you should give them a listen. I have been hard pressed to beat these babies out in twenty five years.

That use to be the 'High-End"stuff.I am so disappointed I never got the chance to jam on my dads Klipsch KLF-20's.I went with him when he purchased them, but he powered them with a Kenwood Rack system.I think it probably put out 60 or 70 watts.Never got to hear what they were really capable of delivering.I went in the service and he retired and took up gambling and those speakers vanished.

There is a pair of 152's for sale here in Phoenix. They appear to be In great shape and claim to be the original owe selling them. What would you put the value at on them?

Yes - you read that correct. The not-so-secret of the ST's are the QWT (Quarter Wave Transmission line) cabinet that extends bass response. Although they have a large port in the back QWT speakers aren't a bass reflex speaker so it doesn't roll off as hard as a normal bass reflex design. Until you hear a pair of song towers you'll always think it isn't possible. The I've never heard the RF-7's so I can't comment on what they are capable of. They do get good reviews.

I would seriously consider some Emo Pro Stealth 8's and ditch your amps.
These things have punch, and I really like their sound.
I will keep my Maggie's plus sub, but for what the OP said...Stealth 8's.

They go for anywhere between $250 and $500 a pair that I have seen recently. I would warn anyone to inspect the woofer foam surrounds before buying though as they are known to deteriorate. If the foam is in good shape they are worth the money and can really bring it!
