I've had my SVS for almost 8 years now. It still sounds great and still rocks the house, but I'm looking for something a little smaller(in terms of physical size). What will give me similar output for around $500. I have zero problem purchasing something used or using 2 subs to obtain similar results. I need the new sub(s) to be able to sit either beside my mains or behind a reclining chair in the corner. Of course, I'm aware these restriction can(and probably will) hurt response and output.
Edit: I will also consider a DIY kit, but I don't want to get into building my own box, but putting something together and a little paint are not outside my skill set.
Ideas?

Try ebay audiogon for a start. Do you have a specific model suggestion?

In that comparison, you are looking at HSU or Rythmik Audio for size and better sound. Unfortunately, they are all more than $500 for a decent one. As such, your only options are to find something used or build one. Personally, I would save up and buy one of the HSU or Rythmik pieces (used or new).

By: What will give me similar output for around $500. ...... I presume you mean quite close in performance, the answer in a new sub is nothing! Perhaps used if you want to go down that bumpy road and you are good at evaluating used equipment. Not sure exactly why the 20-39 PC-Plus is too large, is it the height? The footprint is very reasonable at about 17" round but it is quite tall, 40". A comparable cylinder sub from SVS new will now run about $1200. A good box sub from SVS will run at least $700-$800 (SB-2000/PB-2000). I'm not that familiar with DIY subs but the ones from Parts-Express.com like the Dayton Audio T1204K 12" Titanic Mk 4 might be good if not a little over your budget (there is a cheaper model). New and reasonably close to your current SVS sub IMO might be the discontinued LFM-1-EX or the new Ultra -X12 from OutlawAudio.com (I own the previous LFM-1-Plus and am very happy with it). The LFM-1-EX and Ultra-12 are both on sale as B-Stock for $599 and again a little over your budget. These are fairly large subs and weight about 67lbs. However, they are somewhat slim at only 16-17" wide, 21.5" tall and 23" deep and not the boxy large cube look of many large subs and have a gorgeous Plexiglas top inlay. They are ported and go low for excellent movie playback. www.outlawaudio.com/products/lfmEX.htmlwww.outlawaudio.com/products/ultra.htmlwww.outlawaudio.com/mofcart/bstock.html www.outlawaudio.com/mofcart/bstock.htmlAs far a used subs I would look at subs from the top online direct firms such as SVS, HSU, Outlaw Audio, PSA and Rythmik (that might have sold new in the $650-$1000 range). I would advise staying with the larger style subs if possible for the best performance. I think you will have trouble finding two used subs for any where near $500 with the type of performance you are now experiencing. Many of the very small subs like 11-13" cube from many brands like Sunfire are nice for music but usually lack the lower bass response for the best HT playback. They are also higher priced for comparable performance. I would only consider them if you really need a small sized sub. Good luck!

I presume you mean quite close in performance Yep. The footprint is very reasonable at about 17" round but it is quite tall, 40". A comparable cylinder sub from SVS new will now run about $1200. Yeah. I think the WAF is running out on it sticking out. Plus I wanted to get some new theater seats and I don't have any room to put the sub then. We currently just have a small sectional now. As far a used subs I would look at subs from the top online direct firms such as SVS, HSU, Outlaw Audio, PSA and Rythmik (that might have sold new in the $650-$1000 range). $500 was a general range. I "could" extend it a little. I noticed somebody selling a pair of Emo Ultra 12 on the lounge awhile back(not sure if they are still available) for $350(ea.) plus shipping. I wonder if they would be good enough. I've been trying to get HSU for years, but never found a good price when I actually have cash. I was also looking at PSA awhile, but, the cabinets in those things are pretty huge. A few years ago, I pointed my buddy to Epik, but they have since been out of business. You're right, I would really not like to get into auditioning a bunch of subs and having to pay return shipping if they don't meet my expectations. EDIT: I never really looked into Outlaw audio(at least for subs). Your BStock link gave me a 404...

Sorry for the bad link, it is now corrected: www.outlawaudio.com/mofcart/bstock.htmlThe Emotiva sub is nice but won't go as low as some of the larger subs. It sort of becomes and issue of do you have room only for that small of a sub or do you want a sub that goes down to the 17-22Hz area which is optimum for movie low bass. Many of the smaller subs will go down to the 27-30Hz range with a few of them maybe down to 25Hz or so. Some subs in the 15" medium cube range go down to about 20-23Hz range. These are all approximate ranges to give you an estimate of the low end performance. You need to get out a tape measure to see how big a sub you are considering will be in your room and available space. Don't try to judge the size by an online photo. I'll post a photo of my Outlaw Audio sub below so you can see how it fits next to my sofa, it might be too large for your WAF (the top will scratch if not careful). The Outlaw subs were designed with help from Dr. Hsu of HSU subs. www.soundandvision.com/content/svs-sb-2000-and-pb-2000-subwoofers-test-bench#eHtOtOGYtRfBYq8i.97www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/sv-sound-svs-sb-pb-2000PB-2000 CEA 2010 Results (2 meter RMS) 20Hz 103.8 dB 25Hz 107.6 dB 31.5Hz 109.6 dB 40Hz 110.1 dB 50Hz 110.5 dB 63Hz 111.5 dB Bassaholic Roomsize Rating: Large Source: About.com Stereos from Brent Butterworth Testing Bassaholic MediumSB-2000 CEA 2010 Results (2 meter RMS) 20Hz 92.1 dB 25Hz 97.1 dB 31.5Hz 102.8 dB 40Hz 108.3 dB 50Hz 108.9 dB 63Hz 109.2 dB Bassaholic Roomsize Rating: Medium (check out the significant output difference above below 30Hz and the cabinet size difference between the PB-2000 and the SB-2000 at SVS.com)

I see what you mean. Actually. This doesn't seem like a bad size. It's not overly huge. My SVS is too big because of height. I can't tell you how many people ask, "What is that in the corner?".

The standard answer for folks who own those SVS cylinder subs is: Oh, that's our hot water heater. I use one of my PSA s as an end table, thats what everyone says, and "its the perfect size".

Okay guys..I'm still in the market, but my wife has extended my budget all the way up to $2K....you may be asking yourself why she is being so generous. Well..the answer is I get something for 2K and she wants this ridiculous 30K patio(and a new hardwood floor for the space) and she is trying to butter me up for it...lol. The WER(Wife Exchange Rate) is not exactly in my favor, but I will take it Anyway....I've been trying to narrow the options: 2 SVS PB2000 - $1500 shipped 2 PSA V1500 - $1900(Tom would give me discount since I'm going to pick them up) 1 PSA V3600I - $1900(Tom would give me discount since I'm going to pick them up) - I would have to lay it on it's side and put my center channel on it 2 Dayton 18" Ultimax kits $1800 shipped + probably another $100 in materials(this is sealed box. Not sure why they don't have a ported option) 2 HSU VTF-15H MK2 - $2084 shipped 2 Rythmik FVX15 - $1818 shipped 1 SVS PB13-Ultra - $2000 shipped Warranties do definitely make a difference for me. We will have hardwood floors and here is a diagram of the current configuration. Also the opening with the projection screen will be closed off with a 24" door and everything will be moved down a little. The placement of the subs will be a problem because I really only can put them inside my fronts. I'm not sure if this will be a problem or not. I can't really do a "sub crawl" with the current configuration. Plus its going to change anyway with a new floor and a closed hallway. This room is not a dedicated home theater(it's more man cave/entertaining area) per se, but we are probably 80/20 movies to music(the movie number has gone up since our 2.5 year old seems to start really getting into the disney movies).

On a related note...can I continue using my 20-39 with a new sub(s)?

I had a PC 20-39 PC Plus. You really need a good sealed sub to match, or exceed it. Probably $1000+ ie SBU13 or similar.
Also if you buy another sub, of another make/model I would not continue using the SVS as the two would be way different. Either buy another 20-39 PC+ or sell the SVS then buy a single better sub.
I've had the following
20-39 PC Plus PC Ultra 13 SB Ultra 13 SB Plus 12
