Im looking for great jazz recorded properly on vinyl. Ive found it hard to determine quality recordings on vinyl without waisting my money. As usual, if its badly recorded it will come out poorly. IE, bad in bad out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jazz At The Pawnshop by Arne Domnerus - is IMO a must have for jazz lovers. This isn't a guy with a sax or a trumpet/trombone with a half naked gal hanging on him - its old fashioned jazz. A friend of mine has this in vinyl and it sounds superb. If I ever get another TT I'll have a decent copy of this album. Its a double LP. I have the CD version ripped to FLAC - I never tire of listening to it.

I don't have a link but I imagine you could find it on ebay new and used - and Amazon. Not all pressings are equal. Ask around for the best pressings. I'm sure there are several very good versions.

If you want great jazz recorded properly, start with labels like Analogue Productions and Music Matters, these companies do excellent reissues. Some Classic Records stuff is good, especially Blue note stuff. Now I won't tell you some of these reissues will be cheap, because they won't be but the first two I mentioned are excellent and both use quiet vinyl. On a less pricey note some of the Original Jazz Classic stuff is okay. Mobile Fidelity is okay. Start with artist from the Bluenote, Impulse and Prestige from the 1960's forward.
Great Jazz Artist would be Art Pepper, Paul Desmond, Jimmy McGriff, Santana,Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Blue Mitchell, Sam Jones, Reuben Wilson, Benny Carter, Woody Shaw, The Jazz Crusaders, McCoy Tyner, Dave Crusin, David Sanborn, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Earl Klugh, Jeff Lorber, Larry Young, Larry Carlton, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Kenny Burrell, Ike Quebec, George Benson, Grant Green,, Donald Byrd, Red Garland,Roy Haynes, Bob Jones,Herbie Hancock, Herbert and Ronnie Laws, Hank Mobley, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Smith, Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Julie London, Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Rollins, Thelonius Monk, Don Cherry, Nora Jones, Diana Krall with the more current artist being a Kirk Whalum, Roland Kirk, Pat Metheny, Grover Washington, Yusef Lateef, Wes Montgomery,Illinois Jacquet Nils Lofgren, Bobbi Humphreys, Bobby Huctcherson, Curtis Fuller, The Three Sounds, Horace Parlin, Chris Botti and a Vanessa Fernandez.
Places to find this stuff, Music Direct.com, Elusive Disc.com, Acoustic Sounds.com. You can purchase the Bluenote stuff either, 45rpm or 33rpm directly from Musicmatterjazz.com (The Cover art and vinyl is among the very best). Acoustic Sounds will be more expensive depending on how important quality is. Want to know what older vinyl is worth, get a book called Goldmine.
Remember to clean your vinyl when you get it because all records have that mole release as part of the process and static build up and small paper debris from the paper if it's in a paper sleeve. The sites to find out about Jazz and collectable Jazz would be Londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com.

Modern Jazz Quartet - The Last Concert. Very clear, very delicate sound.
Miles Davis - the Prestige reissues are very good. Walking', Cookin', Relaxin', Steamin', Workin'.
Eileen Farrel Sings Torch Songs - on Reference Recordings. This is a bit of an acquired taste but it's a super disc.

(Sorry to divert this thread a bit, but speaking of Miles Davis, have you all heard about the new Sony movie "Miles Ahead"? Don Cheadle is playing the titular character...cool, right?)

I'm definitely going to watch it. I like the title better than " Kill The Trumpet Player" as was originally planned.

One day way back in 1980 I walked into this record shop that I frequented on the south side of Chicago where I was raised and grew up. It was an old school record shop with three old men behind the counter. They really knew a lot about jazz, music, life, and records. This particular day I wasn't looking for anything in general just looking. They put this jazz record on while I was browsing and it caught my attention. After listening to a couple songs I went to the counter to inquire about this amazing music I was hearing.
It was Shelly Manne & His Men At The Black Hawk. Volume 3. I left that day with that album and it's been a favorite since. I had it on vinyl first. Now I only have the CD but if you can find it in good condition you will be taken back to the night club that night. I could almost swear I could smell the cigarettes, the alcohol, and hear the bartender. If you can't find it on vinyl then choose your next favorite venue and give it a listen.
