Okay,I need a new cart for my $5 turntable (Denon DP-45F) and I was thinking about a Shure M97xE.Does anyone have experience with this either positive or negative to share? How about recommendations of alternatives in a similar price range? I can get theShure for around $69.Thanks.

Thats a good price for that cart. I paid a bit more for the same one. I had it on a Phillips GA-312 - nice TT and underrated IMO. Prior to getting the Shure I had a Bang & Olefsen 10e cart - or something like that. I thought the Shure was better than the B&O cart but it wasn't a 'night and day' revelation. Might have had something to do with the B&O needle being a bit worn and unfortunately was mounted permanently - thats the way B&O made them.

Grado used to be the bargain recommendation, still worth looking at but prices have crept up. Audio Technica makes some well regarded inexpensive cartridges, but I haven't heard them.

I bought one to replace the Goldring EPIC stylus I broke on the Technics TT I picked up for my son. It was defective. No left channel. What was playing on the Right channel sounded very good. Very neutral and smooth. It turns out one pin was not soldered and a second was not soldered very good. I have Amazon replacing the cart. I expect it to be here the end of the week. Its a very popular cartridge.

Shure cartridges have a reputation for very good tracking. The champ was the Shure V-15, which is no longer available, but I'm sure they're all very good. The better the cartridge's tracking, the less is demanded of the tone arm. So it's a great match for a budget turntable.

The 97 has been around forever, and is a solid choice.
