One of the albums appearing in the "New Releases" section of today's HDTracks spam was "Nightbird," by Eva Cassidy.
"Who's this?" I thought, checked it out.
The answer proved to be, "A musical treasure."
Cassidy died from cancer in 1996, at age 33. She'd recorded two albums on local labels, neither of which ever received much notice beyond the Washington, DC area where she lived. But things have changed since then. Her take on "Over the Rainbow" hit #1 on UK pop charts in 2001. In Amazon's 2005 list of their 25 top-selling musicians, Cassidy placed #5.
Cassidy has the range and control of Streisand, the phrasing and spunk of Joplin.
If you're not already a fan, check these out:
Also in 2001 ABC ran a "Nightline" segment on Cassidy. It's here:
PS: HDTracks is selling the new album, "Nightbird" (44.1/16, 2 hrs 20 mins, 33 tracks) for $19.98. I bought the CD from Amazon for $16.99.

I've long been a fan of her music and have several of her albums. Tragically she was taken from us at a very young age. I love that voice!

I think she was great when she was contained but got a little too histrionic for me when she was belting out standards. Fields of Gold is one of the most beautiful recorded songs ever in my mind.

Trey Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth! I first heard her at home on a CD. When Over The Rainbow started I thought OMG, what a talent. Then as the song progressed varies the original notes some and she seemed to try to impress with her over the hill dynamic output. I thought it sounded like she was at an audition for a TV singers competition. Don't get me wrong, she had so much talent and marvelous potential. I was simply disappointed that she didn't seem to have the restraint and maturity of a seasoned vocalist. I do agree on Fields of Gold. How sad that she didn't have more time to fine tune her amazing talent. PS: I just listened to Over The Rainbow here in Japan on my laptop and headphones and the part after 4:00 was not belted out as loudly as it does at home on my very dynamic speakers and amp. Sounds better!

SONGBIRD...This is my second CD STREAM on TIDAL from Eva Cassidy. My first was "Live at Blues Alley" which I had mixed feelings about the substance of the CD, however never a doubt about the warmth or talent in the voice of Eva Cassidy. Songbirds opening song "Fields of Gold" got me! What a lost of talent for us, a woman with such a charismatic voice! RIP...Eva..and Thank you for giving us a peek into your life.

So much music out there to explore.
