The Future at the bottom of page one was interesting. This will take some time to take off. Many here are ready now and there looks like there will be waiting ahead for Media.

I am not buying another version of Star Wars! I think that (4) VHS, (1) Laser Disc, (1) DVD, (1) Blue Ray is enough

They have sure made their money off of me buying somethings 5 times over. I'm done I don't care if they shoot a hologram of Jenna Jameson into my living room. I'm not chasing another new video format.

I might make exceptions for a handful of absolute favorite titles should they become available but for the vast majority of titles I would not be looking to upgrade, yet again. For new titles however I would look towards the new format if pricing is reasonable.

Not me!
Good lord... I had BETA/VHS (3), skipped the Laser Disc, 5+ DVD players (Multiple room faze) and one BlueRay. With plans to get the UHD BlueRay.
Why? Easy... The resolution, color, accuracy and OMG size. Worth every penny we ever forked out for us (Wife and I). And now with streaming, we are happy to get the player that is also going to offer the internet 4K.
And when they offer the 8K, we will do it again!
With that said, we did stop buying discs when the BlueRay came out, with the exception of a few titles. It was the discs that killed us. It is much easier to pay $6 for a movie when you want it (On demand) than $30 to watch two or three times and then give away one day...
Now...
I feel duped when it comes to sound (Dolby this, DTS that, THX this or that). I stopped chasing that bottomless pit in 2007 ish. I only recently upgraded my AV unit because my Onkyo died, and I am pretty sure the ATMOS will finally do what they claimed surround was going to do for us (Movie wise). Otherwise I still would have purchased the AVR-X4200W for the fact we enjoy music just enough to warrant it, and what a lot of TV/movies. So what the heck. I felt we should give it a go...

We should stop lying to ourselves. Once we all get a 4K displays and players we will buy 4K favorites to enjoy. Just wait until the first 4K re-release review gushing over PQ and we will buy.

Agreed And I'm sure that day will come. However I'm sort of bummed that, out of the list of the first few dozen movies supposed to be released on disc in 4k, there are only one or two that really interest me, and most of the ones I am interested in AREN'T on the list. Hopefully that will change soon. (Honestly, what worries me is that studios will make various deals with services like Vidity and NetFlix, to release their content in specific formats, and that the movies I actually want on disc will have their release on disc delayed because someone else has exclusive access to them for a long time.) We should stop lying to ourselves. Once we all get a 4K displays and players we will buy 4K favorites to enjoy. Just wait until the first 4K re-release review gushing over PQ and we will buy.

I still buy DVD's for most movies and Blu-ray's only when I have too or for PQ like Lawrence of Arabia. Playing a DVD in the OPPO-103 onto my Samsung Plasma looks great to me. By the time everyone gets 4k TV's, players and all there favorites again 8k will be coming out.
Does it sound far fetched to think that 8k that requires a new TV, player and 8k movies could be coming out in two, maybe three years with technology advancing ?
I am thinking as long DVD or Blu-ray are sold and I skip buying 4K movies for a few years, 8k or whatever the next thing coming is will be the better choice in the long run. I have skipped technology advances with PC's, TV's and many other things. I have never had a smart phone and who knows I may buy one some day.

As went VHS to DVD, I replaced a lot of them because of the major upgrades in PQ, SQ, and convenience. (I skipped the entire Laser Disc thing because I was in college and after that just starting out in life, so it was too expensive and too much of a niche. At that time I was also like 97% music and 3% video so it was not nearly as important to me.)
As went DVD to Blu-ray, I replaced far fewer. Only movies that see regular yearly play time got replaced, and even some of those didn't (like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy). Some of that has to do with cost (especially with the big multi-disc sets), and some has to do with that 4K Blu-ray has been rumored about and talked about for years now. I strongly guessed that there would be another format to better Blu-ray. So I decided to "skip" the regular Blu-ray upgrade and wait for the 4K. But for me there will be even fewer that I will upgrade to 4K.
With every format change, the actual "value" in performance increase diminishes. Going from VHS to DVD with 5.1 DD was revolutionary. DVD to Blu-ray with DT and DTSm was a definite upgrade, but much more evolutionary. I feel UHD with HDR and Atmos / DTS:X will be another evolutionary change, not revolutionary as was VHS to DVD.
I know tech all marches onward. But my gut tells me 4k UHD will be the last "physical format" upgrade. With each format change, each becomes more and more a niche product that appeals less and less to the masses as value. I think by the time 8k+ starts being discussed, streaming and the like will be more the norm. There may be an 8k physical format in our future, but I think it would be very niche.
Of course there will be 8k TV's because once all the 4k buzz has died down, manufacturers will need something to sell more TV's.
For me, I think an Oppo 115 (or what ever they call it) may be the last disc player I buy by choice.

For those who think the physical disc is dead, think again. As long as the physical disc produces the best picture and sound, there will always be someone (that's us folks), who will buy (or rent) it. Be it 4K, 8K, 16K, etc., we will be there.
My plan this time around is to only buy new 4K discs that I really want. Regular bluray is excellent and I don't plan on re-buying any of those. The current crop of 4K discs comes with a standard bluray also, which I think is a good thing. I did buy The Martian 4K from Best Buy this past weekend. I can enjoy the standard bluray while I wait to eventually purchase an Oppo 4K bluray player. I'm sold on the Oppo players after buying the 103 last year.
So that is the plan. Stay strong. Don't cave in to buying anything I already own and march forward!

A good friend of mine who attends the NAB show each year in Vegas says 4K is passe, and 8K is now where it's at!

I only rent Bluray movies from Netflix and I would think they will start carrying 4K titles to mail out soon. I will likely get a 4K player once the 4K OLED TVs drop in price a little more.
