This reminds me about a little story people saying transistor will replace tubes because transistors are more accurate and have less distortion... Or Vinyl is the thing of the past. What goes around comes around.

Back on topic a bit. I'd like to know how people with these new players like their ergonomics and such. Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD were plagued with issues for over a year at least. Disc's took minutes to load for one thing. Then there were just a bunch of other things that varied from player to player. Slow this, awkward that, HDMI handshake crap, this works great, this sucks, fast forward is super jumpy etc. I'd like to know how people like these new machines.
So far I haven't seen one with a lot of outputs on back. That's no good for me. I want dual HDMI outputs, 7.2.4 analog outs, balanced XLR stereo outs, Toslink / RCA / USB etc digital inputs for DAC decoding (ala Oppo), digital Toslink and RCA outputs, composite video out, and more if I'm missing something. The whole nine yards, cause I like hookup options. Hopefully the new Oppo offerings will have what I'm looking for.
And while these new machines look all pretty, they don't look like their front panels are terribly convenient for anything other than video disks. Load & close and that's about it. Not much for controlling audio discs.

I'm sure there will be a few hiccups with the new 4K capable players, but I think it will not be as bad as the first bluray and HD DVD machines. They are building off of a mature technology.
As to inputs and outputs. The main stream machines have reduced them mainly due to a combination of copy protection (bye bye component), and the fact that most people just use HDMI.
The Oppo 4K player will be the one to get if you want options.

I was told that is due to a FCC law. The only one I could find NEW is the Oppo players. Maybe that is the case with the new players as well. Just a guess. I have not looked into it.

It was The AACS It was implemented Dec-31-2011. If you google Analog sunset hit Blu-ray players it will tell you all about it and why. Why the Oppos still have it I do not know. On a side note. I wanted to see if my Oppo could play a copy of Song of the South from Europe. The answer was yes but no. The player is capable but is shipped out with it turned off. I guess at one time they all could play them then some copyright law made them stop.

I guess at one time they all could play them then some copyright law made them stop. This only affected the analog video section, mainly component video (green/blue/red), not the analog audio section. Players can still have all the analog audio outputs they want. That's why I'm hoping that Oppo bucks the main stream "el cheapo" trend of only having HDMI. They can no longer have the full output spectrum of the old 95 model, but I'd like to see it have a minimum of 7.1.4. Even my old Panny Bluray player has 7.1 analog audio outputs. Actually that component HD thing was an issue way back from the beginning around 2000. The Hollywood folks did not like the idea of having HD content out there in the form of analog because it makes it easy to record and bootleg. From almost the very the beginning of HD broadcasting (around 2002 - 2003 era) all cable and dish boxes produced had a switch inside that could be "zapped" at some future time to disable HD content from being shown over component video. Most people seem to forget about this (or never even knew about it because it wasn't exactly broadcast by Hollywood, instead keeping it hush hush). What people also don't realize is that digital formats like Firewire, DVI, and then HDMI were not created to help the consumer or better the consumer's experience. Of course they were "sold" that way (a propaganda scam really), but in reality it's the Hollywood folks that insisted on it so the consumer had no control over HD content. It took them years of fighting to get it really implemented because making the switch basically alienated 6 or 7 years worth of early adopters who had TV's that only had component inputs (contrary to to what WIKI might have you believe, while HDMI may have been released in 2002, it was certainly not widely installed in actual TV's until around 5+ years later). By 2010ish a large percentage of the main stream public had made the switch to HD TV's (it was during the 2006 - 2010 period when people were switching over like crazy), so the Hollywood folks now had some ground to stand on with numbers. Only then were they able to get their way and have component video removed.

Even though I have a ton of DVD's. Music is my main thing 2 channel stereo. But a few years ago I was trying to find a replacement Blu-ray player and could not find one with analog audio out. All I wanted to do is run my movies though stereo I could care less about 5.1 7.1 or what ever. The only player I could find was the oppo. So that is what I bought. I wish they let it play all region disc. But I did find a guy that makes some little jumper thing that installed in the oppo you can play all region. It all boils down to MONEY the powers that be in the entertainment industry need MONEY. But good Info thanks.

All I wanted to do is run my movies though stereo I could care less about 5.1 7.1 or what ever. The only player I could find was the oppo. It's just because all the main companies have gone cheap. They figure 99% of people will only want HDMI so that's all the put in. Consider me the 1% I guess that want's all available options. Here's the back of my Panny player.

Neither one of these new players will work for me. Very typical for early adopter products made to showcase only 1 thing. The Samsung is very stark. The Panasonic is better, but is still mostly for video. The front is ergonomically made for watching movies only.
