The SVS SB13 Ultra worked well for music but was missing the impact for movies that I could not look past for the crazy purchase price. I thought about trading it out for the SVS PB12 Plus but that thing is huge and not something I want in my room due to how much space it would consume. I would like a good performing ported subwoofer close to the 17" cube or smaller of the SB13 Ultra footprint. What subs are you using for home theater applications that exceeded your expectations and if you tried a few, what ones did you regret buying?

I think you need to state the size and treatments of your room before you will get any worthwhile advice. Im running a pair of PSA ported 15" subs and have great result with HT. On occasion ill use them for music but I really need to be in a bass mood because my Studio 100's provide plenty for music.

The room is 15'x17' with minimal treatment other than a couch and a thick rug over wood flooring. I currently have an old Polk Audio 50 watt 10" ported sub that will actually overdrive the room but does not play down below around 40hz. It has developed an internal rattle when asked to play loud on some heavy LFE movies. I thought it would give up its ghost on U571 during the depth charge scenes.

About the size of my cave, My pair of PSA XV-15se do a great job of recreating the Death Star explosion!! They are out of production but have newer models. Tom will give you some great input if you ask, just go to the websight and use the contact button to ask for recommendations for what you want.
I really enjoyed blowing everything off the walls my first week with them. They are very much stackable if you need to save space. Let me know if I can help.

The SB13 is actually very fickle with placement and settings, particularly with phase that it may seen inadequate for movies. I had to tinker with mine for a long time before getting the optimal performance for movies as well as music. My room is 20.5 x 14.5 x 9ft open to the kitchen and I have enough bass to not get a 2nd sub (yet). Having said that the SB12 plus has way more output and might be what you want. But since it's ported, those other subs like PSA may work for you too.

I have a PB-12 Plus and it is very impactful with movies. In fact it rattles the bottles and glasses behind my bar. I don't need it for music as my speakers play into the 30's.. I'm thinking about getting another one just to be insane..

I think I will spend my Sunday unpacking and revisiting the SVS SB13 Ultra placement and settings. I REALLY want to love this subwoofer and can't figure out why it seems weak on movies with all the power it has at its disposal. I am also somewhat curious what using an XLR cable to it might change if anything.

You've done the sub craw?
You've set the XMC-1 to single mono sub?
When running Dirac, you've set the sub to dials to zero and adjusted the program to proper level?
How far a run is the cable from XMC-1 to the sub.
Let me try to help you,,,,,,,,if I can.

My original sub worked best in the front corner but I didn't want to move it and now placed the SVS in the back corner this time. It suddenly turned into a monster with the new placement and I think I can tweak it to perfection for movies now. The cable being used now is an RCA and about 25 feet but seems ok but I will order an XLR. XMC-1 is set to mono sub. Dirac has always been a disaster for me and I hate the results because it takes my center image and smears it across the whole front in stereo.

What about their cylinder sub's? I've got the PC-13 Ultra & it doesn't take up much floor space at all, you also have the option of laying it on its side too, or running it in 20hz, 16hz or sealed modes.

Are there any benefits to using the PEQ on the XMC-1 vs. the one built into the SB13 Ultra for adjusting the sound or does it matter?

I wanted to listen to one of those but the floor model my dealer had was not set up because they changed the demo room up with Klipsch stuff instead.

I am selling my 2 PSA xs15se. Much better performing sub in my opinion.
$1,400 shipped. The two of these are going to get you huge response and a better listening environment for music.
Fwiw, I have sold a dozen of these sb13ultras over the past 12 months, and most of my clients are dissatisfied.

I feel I am getting much better performance with a new location and playing with the distance setting.
