So I heard Atmos tonight. Great speakers, decent Denon AVR... and it did have great sound as far as SQ goes, but the surround experience left me so underwhelmed I am wondering if it was even set up right! It was at a Best Buy, in a Dolby branded Atmos setup, using what appeared to be Polk RCi80s in the "ceiling" (a plexiglass panel running over the top of the area. The whole thing was set up to mimic a home theatre setup... ceiling was about 10ft, same as mine. Thing is, even though it was a demo disc, playing selections that were supposed to demonstrate Atmos, all I can say is it left me thinking it's no better than a good 7.1 system.
It had to be set up wrong, right? I mean this was the demo disc!

I don't know about the best buy in your neck f the woods but the ones in Calgary couldn't install a speaker set up properly to save their lives. I went into base electronics here in town to check out the anthem avm60 and the atmos set up and it wasn't even installed correctly.. And these guys are supposed to be a "high end" establishment.

OK, that's what I was thinking. A shame.... this was clearly a Dolby branded setup... they certainly wasted their money on it for this location (Ottawa(

They did a great job mounting my television but the calibration left me wanting... By the way, is this a Canadian thread?....

Sounds to me that, to get the "true version" of what they put into the Atmos mix, dinky, "cheapo" speakers in your ceiling with minimum SQ in their amplification won't cut it. That's bad news for people that think they can put 11+ speakers and channels of amplification in their room without spending some serious cash.

So, just think; if Dolby Atmos is that hard to set up, how is the "average Joe" going to be able to set his $399 AVR up correctly? "We" are in the minority when it comes up to being able to set up simple AVR/processors much less complicated "immersive" sound fields.

That's how dumb Best Buy employees are. Straight morons making min. Wage. And not earning commission so they have no incentive to gain knowledge.

I've heard a few Atmos setups. Some were crap and some were astoundingly good. It's more about the setup than the equipment used.

"We" are in the minority when it comes up to being able to set up simple AVR/processors much less complicated "immersive" sound fields. I don't believe it's any different than setting up a quality 7 channel or to a further extent 9 and 11 channel. There are so many people in the world that are happy with the sound just because it has "X" brand name on it, it matters not that it's actually a very poor implementation. For those that have the knowledge and desire to set up even a quality 2 channel system should be able to have an atmos implementation that is true to what was originally intended. The "average joe" doesn't spend obsessive numbers of hours finding speaker placement and measuring for desired frequency response. They unbox drop the speakers where they look and fit best and continue on their merry way. The same is done when said "enthusiasts" buy an avr that has height channels built in, they mount the extra speaker on the wall and forget about them... to you or I it would most likely be a muddy mess but since there is more speakers it therefore must be better.. Rambled a bit but this is how I look at the situation. On a side note, Base has since ripped the Demo room apart and decided to rebuild.. Thank Jebus. Hopefully it will be a flattering demo next time I'm in..LOL.

Re. The average Joe on setup, I agree they are not well equipped to do even a 5.1 right. My sister and her husband bought a HTIB and just sat all the speakers on the cabinet by the TV. Not only was it a bad system to start with, it gave no surround effect at all set up like it was and, frankly, it sounded worse than the TV speakers. But, my brother in law insisted on using it because he insisted on having surround sound. OK...I am quite glad that system died and they got a decent sound bar. It doesn't really provide any surround effect but it at least plays louder than the TV speakers without distorting. (And he turns the volume up really high because everyone in their house talks really loud, so to hear the TV above the people, the TV has to be loud. So then the people talk louder, and he turns it up more...arghhh...)
He is certainly an extreme but the average Joe is not much better. It appears most of us here are well above average Joe's, though.
