I feel vindicated in your assessment of Atmos...I started a thread a while ago called Atmos Schmatmos and took a bit of heat for it but I feel, as I did then, that this will not be a big success for home use for Dolby.
As for my Canadian friends what is going on with your hockey up there?

I'm not surprised that Atmos doesn't impress. I've heard at least four room correction flavors & none impressed me. The concept of room correction holds great promise, but frankly, we're not there yet. It'll get better, so I can wait. But for now, no additional electronic gadgetry for me, thanks.

What does atmos and RC have to do with each other?

Thank you @bmoney - A brain fart on my part - Atmos is a CODEC, room correction an active compensation method. I confused the two & apologize (pre-coffee thinking...).

Louisiana coffee is notorious for its caffeine content - not like that wimpy Starbucks stuff. I never drank much coffee as a child, and got my first introduction to it in the dorm at college. Their coffee was so weak you could see the bottom of the cup! Then one day my Cajun roommate invited me to go to his home in White Castle where Mrs. LaBranche (for whom English was a second language) brought me a demitasse cup (You want some coffee, honey?). THAT stuff could have stood a spoon straight up. I was awake for three days!
When I went to work in the chemical plants, everyone drank (strong) coffee continuously. I never developed the depth of habit that those guys had, but any more, I'm a "one cup in the morning" guy, and until I've had that cup, I languish in my native state (stupidity).
The Community Coffee company of Baton Rouge found a way to slow-roast cheap Bustelo beans, and mix them with a very small amount of the more-expensive Arabaca beans to come up with an inexpensive but very flavorful coffee. Their mix is the preferred local brew. It's also fun to drive or bicycle by their factory and enjoy the aroma (smells almost as good as the local Sunshine Bakery).
So before I go to work, I always have a cuppa Community Joe - Once the grey matter is firing on all cylinders, I do GOOD work.

I think they should keep on adding speakers and then more speakers until they get it right....

Personally I'm fully into it, but yes, the avg. "I want surround sound in my living room" guy, isn't going to be able to come close to doing it right without a lot of research and learning to NOT listen to the Best Buy kid just trying to sell stuff. Setup is key and very room dependant, the guidelines only get you so far. So yes, if you're the kind of person who wouldn't even think about coming to a forum to do some research, your not going to be impressed without some "real" professional help. I'm using all Heights and no in-ceiling, and to me it's far superior to what we've had prior, esp. when you find a well mixed soundtrack, Good Atmos mixes are even superior for the bed layer of speakers, problem is even that is very film dependant at this point, it's just all too soon to be too critical of any of it.
