I'm waffling back and forth between planning to get dual JTR Captivator S1s or Dual Captivator 1400s. I believe that either sub would provide excellent sound quality for my tastes, so the SQ isn't much of a deciding factor. The way I see it is that: 1) Dual Captivator S1s would provide very deep extension, probably below 10hz. 2) Dual Captivator 1400s would provide higher output and headroom. If it helps anyone's replies, I took some SPL readings with my analog radioshack SPL meter with weighting set to "C". In the Avatar scene in which they bring down Hometree, I topped out at 102dB at my preferred listening level. In the beginning of Master and Commander when the Acheron first attacks the Surprise, I also measured a peak of 102dB, also at my preferred listening level. With all kinds of music, I topped out at about 104dB. I've included a floorplan of my HT space, though it is currently being built. It's in a basement, on a concrete floor, but all the walls are framed with 2x4s.

You've answered your own question... Do you want extension or output ? Do you want to feel air move or the room flex ?

You've answered your own question... Do you want extension or output ? Do you want to feel air move or the room flex ? Both! Ha ha. I do want to make sure that I have good headroom so that I don't end up damaging the subs. I definitely want to "feel" the low end as well, especially for movies, but also for bass heavy music too. I love my current HSU subwoofer, but there are times where I feel like I might be approaching the top of what it's capable of. So I know I want something with more output than the 15H. If I knew that the S1 had enough headroom for the listening that I do, then I feel like it might be a no brainer. But if the S1 won't give me the headroom I'm looking for, then the 1400 is probably the way to go.

Is the hsu the version 1 or 2 ?
I've heard the version1 and it's not even in the same league as an s1 or cap1400..lol.. The mk2 is a little closer but you'll still get deeper, cleaner and more output from either jtr offering.

I won't tell you what i really think of it..lol.. You'll be in for a treat with either of those jtr's. The ported cap has an undersized port so it does chuff pretty bad when really pushed but with two and when played that loud you probably won't notice. The s1 uses the same driver and a stronger amp. You could probably get close to the same output with some boost down low using the small sealed box. I use drivers that are quite similar to the jtr driver and the boxes in my avatar are 7.5cuft ported enclosures. I recently switched them to sealed cabinets designed after the s2 and am not missing a single thing..

Yeah, the absence of any port noise would be nice to have from a sealed sub. But I'd hate to buy the S1 and then run into similar headroom issues that I feel I might be running into now!

A single s1 will give another couple db over that hsu. And a second s1 will only add to the headroom.
