I have been researching and I think I am going to build it directly on the carpet. The riser will be the width of the room. Do I attach the riser to the side walls and back wall?

Generally, yes. I have mine free-standing as I have transducers mounted and I don't want to dampen the vibrations. Best to avoid boominess. Are you filling yours with anything? Or just leaving it hollow?

I really did not want to leave a gap between the walls and the riser but if I need to, I will.

Risers resonate so R13 will definitely help tame the boominess. Unless you're installing tactile transducers on the riser itself (as opposed to on the chairs) you won't need separation from the walls.

One of the coolest acoustic isolation constructions I've seen (heard) was the Wrigley auditorium (aka Catalina Casino) on Santa Catalina Island off the Los Angeles coast. Constructed in 1929, the building had a movie theater on the bottom floor, and a dance hall on the top. Cork insulation was installed between the two floors. During the 1930s to 1950s, big bands were radio-broadcast live from the dance hall. But even with a band playing upstairs, it was quiet enough downstairs for movies to run without hearing the commotion upstairs AT ALL!
The movie theater was also designed with acoustics such that one can speak at normal voice levels from the stage & be clearly heard at the back of the theater.
It's an amazing place!

So I have completed the riser. I did have a moment that my brain went south and after I laid down the first half row of plywood, something did not look right. I forgot to put the insulation in the riser. All I have to say is thank god for long arms and I was able to fill the riser with the insulation. They are coming out to carpet it next week. I also added 2 outlets on the riser face and to more on the top of the riser itself for the seats. Looking great!

I decided to build before I carpeted the room for a couple of reasons. We will probably never move and if we do, I will just use the carpet from the top of the riser to replace the area the riser was in, if I ever need to do that. Plus, it saved me a couple of hundred dollars not carpeting under the riser.

I used Auralex products to construct my HT room. I have 4movie theater seating on a riser that is not attached to the side wall or back wall where it is located. However I do used the Auralex U boat floor floaters separating the riser from the cement floor. NO BOOMIENESS

I know we've gotten a LOT of use out of our theater room. Kids love it and it gives the wife and I an escape that is quiet for when the littles go to sleep. Scott The riser for the 2nd row of seats as well as the bar top. Also built a small riser to frame the stage and house the center channel. I know.... center channel is too low. Gonna fix that soon. A final shot showing both risers.
