This could be a viable option for me, as I don't plan on spending more than the $699 that this will initially retail for and hopefully it will go for less once it's out for a bit. Hopefully Oppo keeps their entry level model(BDP-113 ?) reasonably priced as well, as I won't spend more than $699 for it to only be used as a transport.

I'll maybe look for Thanksgiving or Black Friday sale. I agree, the price point for me is around $500-$600.

Any word about Oppo Digital and what kind of mark they want to make in this new field of UHD bluray play back gadgets?

Any word about Oppo Digital and what kind of mark they want to make in this new field of UHD bluray play back gadgets? I am waiting myself. I have always preferred the Oppo not only because of the quality and features but, the generally longer shelf life. I gather there is still the issue of compatibility and what to do with the competing "Ultra super duper" HDR formats(Dolbyvision and SUHD 10)and whether or not players along with the newer monitors will incorporate one or the other or both systems. The only monitors I have seen so far incorporating both(there may be other brands)are the upscale LG OlEDS and LEDs along with the higher end Vizio models. I love my Oppos BDP105 and in conjunction with my new LG 4K monitor it does a wonderful job of upscaling BR discs to a point of being virtually indistinguishable from compressed 4K video from sources like Netflix etc., BUT, it cannot do anything with 4K material itself off its own internal Netflix sight(1080p only). I am assuming all the forthcoming UHD players will incorporate the latest software from all of these online sources. I am currently watching Netflix through my monitors sight, which has the latest software( including 4K material AND regular upgrades) and feeding the sound back through my A/V system. I am sure Oppo will eventually come up with something pretty remarkable.

I have an OPPO - 93 and a Samsung 4K player hooked up to a LG OLED 55 inch TV. I spent hours trying to see any difference from a 1080P in the OPPO (via XMC-1) to the LG and the 4K player directly to the LG. The differences were very minor, if any. I would watch one chapter, then switch to the other player and watch that chapter again, over and over again. When OPPO finally releases a 4K player, I may try with their unit again. I still have a few UHD Blu-Rays that I play with the player, but not seeing a huge improvement.
Maybe 8K will make a difference. Also, a larger TV may make a difference from my 55 inch.
And I picked up a DirecTv 4K unit as well, playing directly to the LG, with sound via the XMC-1. Once again, not a massive difference in picture. The DirecTv unit will also upscale to 4K output, but the TV already handles the 1080P - 4K exceptionally well. Maybe with a lesser TV there would be more of a difference.

If history repeats itself, Oppo's UHD player will reign supreme and be lower priced than offerings from competitors like Pioneer, Yamaha, etc.

I would expect a price tag of $499 to $599 for a non-Darbee entry level player.

I'm quite encouraged to hear the LG OLED's upconvert/scale 1080P sources quite well.

Thanks for posting this. I apologize but what are the main differences between this and the 4k Samsung player? I'm not a fan of Samsungs disc players, so I'm not very familiar with the Samsung UBD‑K8500. Just take a look at the "Shop Panasonic" link I posted above and compare it to the Samsungs website. The Panasonic UHD bluray player has only been officially released in Europe and coming in the next few weeks here in the US, so actual comparisons are slow in coming right now.

Everything electronic I own outside of Emotiva/Sherbourn is Panasonic. I love their Bluray players and televisions. I have not seen their latest offerings but I would feel confident buying from them again. They have always been a great bang for the buck and the user interface is always very simple so pretty much anyone can use it.

Ive had continued great results with Samsung products. I have a couple if their higher end 3D players and the new 4K and have not ever had an issue. I dont need THX or whatever from my players as I have better gear for specific tasks. The new 4K player isn't made like an Oppo, ( Emotiva tank grade ) but it does its job admirably.

I haven't had any problems out of it and most of my Blu-ray players in the past were Samsung with the exception of my theater ones Marantz (died) and now Denon.

I'm not a believer in THX certifications. I've had a few Pioneer AVRs, some with and some without THX, and I'm skeptical of the whole thing. Marantz and Anthem make some of the most popular AVRs and processors but don't THX certify. Sort of wonder if it's 90% valid and 10% hype.
