My HT is also my living room, so compromises must be made (though I live by myself, so no waf to deal with). Right now the walls are a pathetic pale yellow. I'd like to darken the wall behind the TV panel to improve viewing. Given livingroom usage, I think black is too oppressive. The ceiling is white and cannot change; landlord's rule... I'm thinking more elegant, less "man cave".
I thought I'd paint the wall behind the TV (and the adjacent wall) dark brown. Then I'd paint the other two walls a lighter, complementary colour. My shelving, HT gear, etc is black. My furniture is dark walnut. The carpet will be replaced with something complementary. I'm going to put two acoustic panels (L&R) on the "TV" wall which will also be in the lighter, complimentary colour.
Anyway, I've got dreadful taste when it come to decorating; but I know I don't want to turn the room into a black Goth hole. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Sincerely /b

Although it would be a pain in the a-- to paint, maybe you could start with a darker brown and then do sections with lighter colors until you get to the adjacent walls with the lighter color.

Have you thought about doing a dark grey, and then lighter greys to compliment?

Having a dedicated HT ROOM now for 16years MO and you can take it for what it's worth, you do NOT need to paint your walls and ceilings dark...especially BLACK...UGH! Light brown, light gray, and light blue would do the trick. In my room I have painted my ceiling chocolate and the walls a LIGHT SAND color. It works well. I am not suggesting that you paint your ceiling even chocolate...it's not necessary, especially having a TV.
You want to enjoy your room..in every perspective HT, 2channel and estediclly
BTW/Eggshell or a Flat paint...preferably EGGSHELL

Color is a giant debate like speakers. I would suggest looking online at like dutch boy etc and look at the online tools where you can pick a room and colors and see what it looks like with the colors. I found most colors are a little darker in real life also, as compared to the online tools. If you are renting you most likely will have to repaint if you decide to move out later. Earth tones are usually pretty good in this case. My living room is painted in gray tones, my furniture is mostly a darker walnut also and I really like the combo. I had tan first and hated it over time. I also found out after my tan room, that spending a couple bucks on the samples to try first will allow you to see if you like a color before buying a couple gallons of paint and not being happy afterwards. Good luck and enjoy.

I have a dedicated home theater room. It has dark paneling, dark carpet, and a white ceiling. I do find the white ceiling distracting. It reflects enough light that it causes the black level on my projection screen to grey out. especially at the top. I do, on the other hand, find it handy for providing enough light to find my remotes and snacks Most theaters are colored dark red. Though I believe any dark color will work, I have thought about putting an acoustic panel (black) directly above my screen. I'm afraid that if i paint my ceiling anything other than white that it'll affect the houses resale value. I have my doubts that it would ever be a "white" ceiling again. Any dark color would work. Find a friend that's artistic, and have fun with the color scheme.
