Last night during TV viewing all of a sudden the audio dropped to nothing, no blinking lights, no loud bang, smoke, pop or click, silence. Everything else up and down the audio chain stayed on, not so much as a blink. All digital inputs produce a minor hum that gets louder as gain is increased. Was listening to the Olympics in DD via HDMI Direct TV box. The pure/direct mode with analog inputs produces audio fine, but when I select "stereo" or any processed affect, no sound. So sounds like something bit the bullet. Love the sound of this unit for 5.2 50/50 movie 2 channel, not into more channels than that. Looking for some direction, I know most will say get XMC-1, but any advice or opinion is greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

Shame.. Bottom line is $$. In my area there is one repair service that I have used for some time when I needed a repair and the unit was out of warranty. $80.00 up front to look at it BUT the $80.00 is subtracted from any other additional costs like parts if needed. I would first find out how much the unit is worth, talk to a tech who may have an idea of total cost for repair and then make the call. If you are happy with the Marantz and the repairs are worth the investment I would keep it. If you do not want or need additional channels then why purchased the XMC1? The 8801 cannot be that old since they only came out a short time ago and is the flagship model with EXCELLANT reviews. If it were me and I liked the unit I would have it repaired if it was financially efficient to do so. Think about what you paid for the unit weighed against how much more investment you have to put into it now. I would take a guess that it is NOT a major problem and therefore not costly.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I use my Oppo 103 direct to the amps - and the XSP-1 in HT mode routes the L/R signal through to the Acurus. FWIW for the times that I play a movie I don't miss a pre/pro or AVR one bit. Once you set the speaker distances and trim the volume on each channel it sounds pretty danged good. Less is better IMO. It was a great idea for Oppo to put an analog volume control in their players.

If repairs are too expensive you might look into accessories4less.com. You can get a refurbished unit there. If you only need 5.2 channels you can get a Marantz 7701 (I think) for about $750.00.

knucklehead-Oppo direct to amp does sound very very good. I do get a little hiss that wasn't there before, not sure what that is, playing with that now, love it. Took the unit in, 7 to 10 days for diagnosis, then estimate, eeeck.

Repair update The technician says a chip deep inside the processor somewhere is NG, new one from Marantz is available so that's good. Another week or so and back in the sound saddle. He also said if the pre/pro had been just a few years older, there might not have been an OEM chip available from Marantz.
