I need a new DVD player for rental DVDs and want 4K resolution and HDR. They are going for about $300. The new "Xbox One S" costs $299 and includes a bunch of games. I've never had a gaming console before, and don't know much about them, but it seems like more bang for the buck. Except it's made by Macrosloth, so if Windows is any example, I'll have to reboot it every few hours... Then there is the PS4 pro. There is also the versatility of the OPPO, except that it costs twice as much and I don't have any CD's . It bothers me that the Xbox One S is not black, so won't match my EMO gear. Who has an Xbox One S? Is it a winner? Opinions on which to buy? Sincerely /b

I assume you mean you want a player for HD bluray or UHD? If you are renting SD DVDs any of these players are overkill. (I assume you meant rental Bluray discs) If so, there are a number of players that can upconvert HD to UHD for <$100 but so will pretty much any UHD display device. I have used the Xbox One S and it is decent and can play UHD discs, but lack of Atmos support is an omission to note if Atmos is important to you.

If you want games get the XBOX or PLAYSTATION if not get a Blu Ray.

I got mine cheap and my decision was based on the fact that it's a computer as well as a UHD disc player. It streams enough content that I sold my Roku 4. As a hub, it turns on/off everything. Yes, it's MS...but it is more likely to receive SW updates than the Sammy and Philips players. PS4 Pro did a major mistake by omitting 4K disc play, especially when they own Sony Pictures.

Good news no DVD's are 4k or even 1080p for that matter! (That would be me)

Good news no DVD's are 4k or even 1080p for that matter! That's very true. But I'm buying for the future, not the past. Otherwise, I'd be shopping for a VCR... ;-) The Xbox One S does 4K resolution and HDR and BluRays. Sincerely /b

OP, I think I might be able to help you a bit here.
Coming from someone who sells both of the items you're pointing out, and has an Oppo...
For starters, the only reason you should consider purchasing a console is if you plan on using the gaming aspect of it. Do not waste your time nor money on a unit that is bloated with a ton of things to sift through just because you want the BluRay feature. It's a terrible reason, and the drives built into those units are generally fairly cheap. After all, the company has to make some margin of profit on the console somehow, and how they do that is they cut down on manufacturing costs and parts. A BD Drive in a PS4 is not going to be the same kind of quality as that of an Oppo, nor will it's ability to process video. It's not designed for that. It's designed to be a gaming console for people who are interested in playing video games.
Now in general, I tell people if they want to buy a console for them to 1) examine games on both consoles and decide what they like, buy the console that has the games you want to play and; 2) buy the console you know your friends will have if you care about online play. In general, the PS4 is the superior system because it's less bloated, has more game selection, and is cheaper to run on the whole. It's also a more family oriented machine, where the Xbox One is not. I regretted my Xbox purchase since the week after I got it because there were absolutely no games I wanted to play, and navigating the menus was a pain in the hind.
All that being said, I own a PS4 now and I own an Oppo. I would not ever use my PS4 as a BDP. That Oppo is clearly the superior unit - as it should be, that's what it is designed to be. So again, if you have no interest in gaming, do not buy a console, buy a player. There are some decent Samsung units out there that are 4K UHD ready and would be money better spent.

I would echo ibiza's comments. If you are interested in blu ray and 4 k playback, buy a dedicated unit - even if you have to wait for the Oppo 4k.

I had an Oppo 103 and they refused to update the Netflix app, if Netflix is important think twice about Oppo.

Also, forgot to mention, I'm not a gamer but bought the Xbox One S for the HDMI input and the LPCM capabilities for a MiniDSP nanoAVR DL Dirac Live. Windows Media Center PC > Xbox Hdmi Input > MiniDSP nanoAVR DL = Dirac Live
