Happy Saturday, So one of my XPA-5's started going into protection mode. It would do this as soon as I turned my Onkyo pre/pro (PRSC5508) past 44.5 on the volume control. There were 2 open inputs on the amp that were not being used. I tried both of these and same issue. The red light followed the right front channel. Tried different cables and same results. I've only used balanced XLR cables since day 1
So now I narrowed it down to the output on the Onkyo. I swapped out this one channel (right front) from a balanced cable to an RCA cable. Working fine now and not going into protection mode.
My question is, will it be ok to continue using one RCA cable while the other 6 are balanced XLR cables?
TIA for any input....

Only difference should be output level being lower on the RCA, check your levels if possible or rerun your room correction software if needed, sorry I know nothing about actual Onkyo processors lol but you may just have to match your levels.

Chad Thanks, I only had one RCA cable laying around so I'll order some more tomorrow. In the interim, I'll rerun Audyssey and see how the fronts compare with my SPL meter. I'm done with Onkyo with this and previous issues I've had!

Maybe a bad xlr cable? Try replacing it Yeah I mentioned that I tried different cables but no luck. Does the same thing using any of the amp inputs and different cables. There is something going on with the XLR output for that channel with the Onkyo. Thanks

Thanks Perfect time to go with an XMC-1 and Dirac I wish but holidays take priority with the family Using the one RCA cable for the front right, I was getting a very audible hiss from that speaker. Came up with a work around by putting the pre/pro into bi-amp mode and using the rear surround XLR outputs as the front outputs. Working great now, ran Audyssey and fine tuned with the spl meter.

As a current owner of an Onkyo Pro PR-SC5508, I can tell you that Onkyo has a known issue with the audio circuit in that unit. They will fix it free one time or offer you an upgrade. Call Bigston Corporation. Give them the serial number and then choose what to do. My advise is to let them fix it then sell it and buy the XMC-1. The Onkyo audio output will completely fail once the problem starts then it will fail again when it's been repaired. My repair lasted about a year. The don't upgrade the problem circuit, just repair it so, if fails again. www.bigston.com/I am currently fixing mine again and will be sell it. The XMC-1 is far and beyond better in every way if you don't need to do some fancy video tweaking.
