I've been listening to Natalie Merchant's CDs since leaving 10000 Maniacs.. has anyone ever heard her album "The House Carpenter's Daughter" and "Leave Your Sleep"? I really liked these two. I only streamed from my phone into headphones, and thought the recordings were really nice and her take on those old folk songs is beautiful. I really love her voice. Leave Your Sleep was fun to listen to. I'd really like to know more about how she came up with the music. Anyway, I saw her perform one of the songs from Carpenter's Daughter CD on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts ( youtu.be/iOdsAE8Mq7I ), and looked up some of her solo stuff. I really like music.

I love Natalie's voice. I've been a fan since her days with 10,000 Maniacs. I have her whole solo collection with the exception of Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings. For 10,000 Maniacs I have The wishing Chair through MTV Unplugged. My fav of her solo work is Tigerlily. Which is why I don't have the re-recording. The original was perfect and there was no need to re-record it for a 20 year anniversary.

Don't ask me to explain why though. Haha.

But I don't mind her redoing, I find it interesting how she redid them.. I don't really look at them as a better version, maybe just a different take... but yeah, I know what you mean

To put it lightly, she just didn’t do anything for me. As mentioned elsewhere I ound her a little monotone and nothing reached out and grabbed me. I listened to six of her songs mostly on her MQA lp. Some like chocolate others vanilla.

I can care less for the voice or the music but I do like the duet she does with Michael Stipe off the Deluxe Box Set of R.E.M.’s “Automatic For The People” that was recorded during those sessions but never released. I feel it could have been released as a single at the time. It’s that good!

Partial to the Maniacs stuff but she's great always.
Same with Bjork. I really enjoy her solo albums but her three albums with The Sugarcubes are super cool.

Looks like there are multiple albums - which one should I start with?

I've listened to Fruit mostly. I really like the song Golden Age. It was used in a Heineken beer commercial, and it was how I originally heard of the group.. I liked the song, so looked them up and played quite a few of songs. I don't think many people will like them, based on my history. LoL
