Just a super quick poll to see how many people here still like to listen to plain old radio using their main system (not your car, not your bedroom, not your deck or patio, or the bathroom. But if one/some or all of those are hooked up using your main system unit, then yeah that counts). If you use a processor please check the box that best matches your choice. If you use a receiver, same deal. I limited the poll to one choice only.

Processor? As in a dedicated tuner? Confused...

Processor? As in a dedicated tuner? Confused... Processor, as in like an XMC-1, with no built amplification. Not all processors necessarily come with a tuner, although many do. Receiver, as in like, I dunno, a Sony at Best Buy, or my Denon 3805. I believe all receivers have tuners. I made them separate to help distinguish between the 2 since they are slightly different.

I do listen to the radio in the car and on my bedroom clock/radio, I never listen to it in my main listening room.
But, I don't think it's worth the effort to rip out if I was a manufacturer. I doubt very much that it's a significant cost center in processors.

I use the tuner on my TA-100 all the time. It's mostly for back ground noise not for when I sit down and get serious about listening to music. Lack of HD is missed.

I have never used the tuner on either my processor upstairs or the avr in the living room. But I honestly can’t think of why the mgr would pull it out. It has to be dirt cheap to have.

I voted "sometimes" as I do not use it "all the time" but I do use it frequently. Sometimes I have the radio on a station I like whilst doing something else, and sometimes I want to do a quick check of the weather or road forecast and like to get the local news. Not having the tuner would be very vexing for me.

I commonly have the radio on in the background in Zone 2 or 3, but hardly ever in Zone 1. Plus for live sports (Zone 1) I quite often have the video from the source (FoxSports, ESPN etc) and the radio for audio commentary.
Cheers Gary

Thanks Bonzo. It eventually clicked for me. LOL Perhaps a standalone tuner option would have been interesting too.

2 processors: XMC & MC-700 - Never 2 TV's with cheap Onkyo AV receivers - Never 1 garage setup for music while working - H&K receiver - Sometimes
Basically "never" on any of my video setups, and "sometimes" on my garage stereo.

All the time in my living room upstairs, pioneer avr. The dude I bought my anthem from kept/lost the fm antenna so I use Volumio to play radio and stream my ota music. I voted sometimes. I used to use the tuner on my marantz all the time as it worked AWESOMELY. Xmc tuner, almost never as it was full of static and never sounded very good.

Does an AKAI AT-2600 FM tuner count?

Probably 5 hrs/day on my PT-100, all NPR, while I edit scientific papers as a part-time editor. Not a receiver or processor, so no box to check.

My NAD Receiver (currently working only as a Pre-Amp) has a pretty decent tuner in it. I NEVER use the AM selection, but still occasionally enjoy some FM while I'm cleaning the house or working on some project and don't want to fiddle with CDs etc.
However - an actual component tuner would be better if it were reasonable price-wise. In the 1980s (granted, less music program choices back then...) I was on the 12th floor of a high-rise Dormitory. A buddy had a Harman-Kardon tuner with the Analog dial and face that changed between Green and Amber when it "locked-on" to a station (probably 700 or 800 Series component). One particular Rock-n-Roll Station that we really liked (WAPL) was at 105.7 and relatively weak because although they had one of the most powerful transmitters in the USA - they were about 100 miles away "as the Crow flies". There was a Country Station at 105.9 that was MUCH closer. That H-K Tuner could pick and lock to either of them clearly, without drifting. I have never seen another tuner that was that good.
Most of what most companies build into their modern receivers are PLL-Synthesized C-R-A-P - it's cheap, and it works under near-ideal conditions, and it's "good enough" for the masses, but CRAP nonetheless...
Compound the crappy tuners with increasingly wide variations in how each FM Station equalizes their music signal and it makes me wonder why I even bother (but hey! it's FREE!) As I stated in a previous rant - variations in CAR Stereo systems make this even MORE evident / more problematic than home stereo systems.
Does that make me sound like a "stodgey old fart"? (If I'm being honest with myself, I'm probably about "hip deep" in those waters, but I really don't care!)

To be honest I don't even know if my processor contains an FM receiver. The only radio we ever listen to is once in a while we will put on the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame broadcast from Sirius/XM. But we stream that over the internet.
