www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-jPWrGUjEsI look back to when Surround sound took the world by storm and I jump in with both feet. I probably spent $20k on "new" stuff that is now defunct.. I sold GREAT equipment that I can't afford to replace today. Pioneer & Thorens TT, Empire, Shure & Stanton cartridges, Dokorder, Teac, Akai tape decks, Class A amplification & tube amps because that was "old stuff" lmao, I was a dumbass. I do agree the DIY speaker technology kicks the box store's ass, hands down. Everytime I listen to my 2-way partio speakers I get a big grin- "I made those." for a quarter what you would pay at a store for the quality. What do you think?

Totally, today's "pre-pro" is tomorrow's boat anchor, while tubes and 2 channel rule.
Just compare resale values of good stuff in either mode, and the truth outs...

That was a great video, my technician friend has two reel-to-reels we listen to on occasion, a blast from the past, damn I am old. I have not done any DIY speakers since high school, but I have recently done DIY surround sound speaker stands for half the price

That'll work, Steve When you go Emo, you go all in. bravo I can't say I'm so tight I squeak, but I am frugal & still like to DIY most things- Keeps me out of trouble, motivated & my mind working. (some may argue that last point) The thing is, I was into really good equipment at a small fraction of what I've spent on multichan because I traded & traded up til I had what many only wished for; took two decades.
after thought- The real screamer was the 'ex' throwing out "stuff in the closet that was junk." You can have the house & 11% mortgage, I want my "junk"

Why does that comment not surprise me, audiobill. lol I've got a $2,000 B&K Ref 10 Preamp in the basement. Its Dolby Digital Only and has only up to S-Video. Only crossover is 80Hz. What's it worth today? (Plus I bought a $1,000 matching amp) If I had spent that same $3k on a McIntosh or Naim setup it would still be as relevant today as the day I bought it. The B&K not so much. Home Theater is a bottomless pit of despair.

Watching that guy drink was making me sick ( pretty lame) but I got his point....and he has some pretty cool stuff in that room of his. All this stuff is great fun any way you dole it out and to each his own. When I sold off gear it was because it had outlived its usefulness in the course Of advancing my idea of state of the art, which was seamless integration of music and film in one system with no need for a second, or at least nothing serious. DIY can be very cool but hard to compare to the high end gear that is highly engineered by real experts in the field. Bill

I have no idea what he is talking about, I have had the same sound system since I started work (think decades, lots of decades). Of course at various times I have changed the turntable, CD player, BD player, pre amp, processor, power amp/s and speakers but it's still the same sound system. Theseus's paradox (AKA Grandpa's Axe) at work.
Cheers Gary

Bill I'd take a speaker designed by Jim holtz, Matt Grant, Jeff Bagby or Paul Carmody over half of your "real experts"...

Totally, today's "pre-pro" is tomorrow's boat anchor, while tubes and 2 channel rule. Just compare resale values of good stuff in either mode, and the truth outs... Very very true. The audio component that has and will lose value the fastest, is the preamp/procesor. Not far behind is a DAC. Technology changes so quickly in those areas, and what's the greatest today, is far from the greatest next year. I have high end power amps from Threshold that are 20 plus years old, that are still at least the equal of whatever else is available today. That does not hold true for any component based on digital technology.
