So I have an XMC-2 on 2.0 firmware. I have it set up as 7.3.2.
I should be running 5.3.2 due to room size. My couch is up against the back wall, so technically I should not have rear speakers, but the shape of my couch is unusual, and there is a ledge on the couch about two feet behind the MLP, and a foot lower and I have some very small speakers that nestle nicel into that spot. To my surprise and delight it actually works well. I have done quite a bit of testing and this works well as 7.1... it probably should not but it does.
So with that out of the way we move onto my question… I do have two Atmos ceiling speakers installed and they're installed in the correct position (per Dolby) and they sound pretty good, They are bipolar (that's what I have, I know.. I know) but I would like to install front Heights, but I can't figure out how. Is it possible to have front height with top middle? It doesn't look like it's possible in the menu.

Yup. Atmos/DTS-X is supposed to be object based.. so technically you should be able to put speakers anywhere, as long as you can inform the processor of what you have enabled. So really, I should be able to enable front heights.. but seems I cannot

Front height is set to Sm Top Middle right now, I thought it was one or the other. I didn't relize that if I set it to Sm Front Height, I could then set Rear Height to Sm. Top Middle... thanks!

In the Speaker portion of the menu, the results of what is left to choose from is dependent on what is chosen first. It updates Live when a selection is made.

OK I have tomorrow off... will be setting this up... wish me luck! 4 new speakers going in tomorrow... replacing my tiny surrounds with the Emotiva B1+ (that's 2), and putting in "front height" - that's two more Emotiva B1+. The Energy speakers coming out of surround duty will be added to my rears, in parallel with identical speakers. Will try them that way and hope for no comb effect... otherwise they will become wides.

I would double check before installing the front height. If your current top speakers are in the perfect position for Top Middle in an x.x.2 setup then adding in front height might suck some volume out of them and make the sound "less overhead" and simply more forward. The way to check this is to simply enable front height and connect your current Top Middle as suggested above and see what happens to your Top Middle volume. I just tried this and it wasn't good (I did silence all of my other speakers by turning the Balance to RCA switch on the XPA for each channel). I know the miussing sound should get diverted to the Front height, but the overhead speaker went mighty quiet!

Just checked, if there is a reduction, and I think I perceive one, it's very slight, like barely audible.. so that would be 1db to 1.5db no?
