How does the XMC-1 headphone amp compare to external headphone amps? Here is my experience...YMMV: XMC-1 - Hard to drive headphones "worked", but I really had to push the volume in order to get satisfying results. I ended up getting a Schiit external headphone amp which worked great. XMC-2 - Plenty of volume on the built in headphone amp. I moved the Schiit to another area of the house, combined it with a Schiit DAC and use it with my computer, phone, Ipad.

How would I connect an external amp so I can listen to blu-ray movies on my Oppo 203? There is a Zone 1 RCA out on the XMC-1 that you would use, I would go for the Magni Heresy model for only $99 www.schiit.com/products

I have an inout setup for my stramer and all triggers for external amps turned off. However when I listen to Headphones, I have the Magni right next to my chair, so can easily use its volume control. If you use the Zone out on the XMC-1 you could max out (80%?) the volume on the Magni and control the level from the Zone 2 volume on the remote. Just watch that you don't leave your HP plugged in if you have the external amp maxed.

Is the Zone 1 RCA output not fixed, like the ones beside the Zone 2 RCA out, either way the REC out works as well, pretty sure that's how my buddy connected his headphone amp but he now has the XMC-2 and there is no REC out or extra Zone 1 RCA out so he can't connect it that way anymore Chad

I found that to be a pain in the ass. The circuit would not mute when plugging in the headphone. If I recall, you had to switch to Zone two to get it to work. The XMC-2 front, built-in headphone amp works very well though. Using both Audeze and Audioquest headphones with no issue. My Schiit sits on the end table with one of their Dacs and I use it with my phone, Ipad, or laptop and the "stack" works great.

Seems to make more sense using the Zone 2 if you don't have an amp connected to it like it do, that way it's easier to adjust volume and such. Chad

I haven't looked at that as I have Z2 running to a power amp for the patio speakers, so the variable output is ideal in that use case.
