Unfortunately that error message basically means that the UMC-1 cannot start up successfully... and that could be caused by a variety of problems. If it's a hardware problem, it would be VERY difficult to troubleshoot, and there's a very good chance that the parts needed to fix it are no longer available anyway. You're also looking at the firmware part of the situation wrong... It is possible that the firmware is corrupted and that reloading the firmware might solve the problem... And, if so, re-loading the firmware MIGHT get it to work again. However, if that is true, then there is no benefit to trying to load a different version of the firmware. (There's no reason why a different version would be more likely to load successfully... )
You would be better off trying one of the alternate load methods with the current firmware... Or try a different (and very short) USB cable... Or even try a different USB port or a different computer... It's a bit of a long shot but you might get lucky...
