Maybe I’m being a little tough here, but would it have been too much to ask that the LED brightness on both units be the same? I’m thinking shelling out 5k on matching gear should at least result in somewhat similar brightness. It’s just not even close. Can this be solved via a firmware update? XMC-2 set at 100% and it’s still way darker than the XPA-7…

It'd be nice to have a switch that would cut the brightness in half or just turn them completely off.

Yeah, my rack is positioned so I can have both on which I prefer anyway. However, the XMC-2’s max brightness is pretty weak. I would guess ~50-60% the brightness of the XPA-7 (Gen 3). I think it’s something that could be addressed via firmware, but I’m no engineer😉. Curious if this applies to everyone, or is it just this particular unit. Just purchased and received them last week…

Actually, so do my old Gen 1 amps, I completely forgot about it since the back is not terribly accessible in my system. Might have to dig around back there this weekend. IIRC, the XPA-2 even has separate witches for the power/status and meter LEDs. As for changing them under FW control, it depends... There may need to be a HW change as well. I have been covering mine, and just bought some sheets of blue plastic to dim them. I like having them on, just not so blinding in low light.

Just fyi, McIntosh adjusts their patented blue leds to a predetermined brightness value as part of their QA. Part of what you pay for, probably too much to ask at these bargain basement prices.

Not sure if I’m just missing the sarcasm, or listening to some audiophile elitist…Either way, dropping 5k on a prepro and amp for most, including myself is a decent amount of dough. Hell, and I’m retired military and continue to work full time.

No snark intended, but if not for the price, why did you choose these? I’ve understood that these were “value leaders”, and it may be a lot to expect such refinement.
Cheers.

Value is all in the eye of the beholder and what they budget for. I’ve been an AVR guy throughout my entire life. Usually spending ~2K on an AVR every 5 years has gotten me great performance and a very enjoyable HT experience. Now that I’m at a point in life where pinching pennies is less of a worry, I decided I would try getting into separates..I chose Emotiva for various reasons, I really like the idea of the trade up program and upgradeability to future HDMI specs. Heard good things from a few folks I know as well..Sure I’d love to get some Macintosh gear at some point, I’m sure it’s pretty stellar, but I just can’t bring myself to drop that kind of money on something where I don’t think the gains (for me) justify the expense. It is very pretty and well made though 👍
