Yesterday morning my wife was watching tv with our Marantz 8802a when the volume started going up on its own. Fortunately, she was able to manually turn the volume down before it blew my speakers. The remote was not controlling the volume up or down and the unit would not allow her to shut it off. All she could do was turn down the volume using the physical volume knob. Last night we watched TV for about three hours and it worked just fine. Then, this morning, the same thing happened to her. Is it a ghost in the machine? Tonight I'll do a reset and see if that helps. Any ideas or suggestions?

Remove the batteries from the remote and see if the problem reoccurs. If it does, it's time to contact Marantz for a solution. EDIT: There's also a dedicated "owners" thread for the Marantz 8802 over on the AVS Forum where you might find a quicker response (or a possible solution). You'll find that thread HERE

You might want to check those setting both in your new TV and your 8802. CEC can lead to some funky and unexpected behavior if left to function unbridled...

I had a similar issue with my old Harmony 1100 remote. The volume would stick and drive the volume up until it maxed out or I hit the volume up button again to "unfreeze" it. Several times almost blew my speakers.

I'm rather certain its not the remote. I had her pull the batteries this morning and the same thing happened afterwards.

99% sure it’s the CEC.

The success was very short lived…..not so much because of them. My Marantz carousel DVD changer at that time became an albatross with all of the format wars rendering it useless. I paid over 700 for it and actually had to relegate it to the trash pile! I did save the feet and repurposed them. Small wonder why some of us are hesitant to getting caught up in the latest and greatest

I'm hoping so and it may make sense since this just started after installing a new TV. I hooked it up Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning the Marantz went wonky. Last night I reset the TV and installed the latest update. Everything was fine for the rest of the night. Then this morning it went sideways again.

I looked into this issue out of curiosity and found that the potentiometer itself certainly could have gone south in that unit.

Well... LG's Simplink (horrible name BTW) was not enabled. Neither was the CEC in the Marantz. However, in both units I turned off anything that allowed communication via network. I also discovered that when I asked my wife to pull the batteries from the remote we apparently had a miscommunication. She pulled the TV remote batteries. This may be relevant because the Marantz batteries were almost toast. There was enough juice in them for the remote to work intermittently. It may explain why she couldn't turn off the Marantz. Also, maybe that made the volume function stick when she pressed the vol up? I also noticed the Roku remote was enabled to control the TV, so I disabled that as well. Its how she was turning on the TV. Finally, I had the Marantz app open on an iPhone. Its one I keep as a spare remote. Maybe that errantly sent signals? I highly doubt it, but figured I might as well remove it while I'm trying to eliminate all possibilities.
In any case we watched TV for almost three hours last night and everything was rock solid. I'll be able to put several supervised hours on it this weekend. Hopefully, nothing will go awry, but if it does at least I'll be able to observe it. My poor wife is feeling like she's nuts.
On a positive note, this new LG OLED C1 is amazing.

Usually, when you "hold down a button" on a remote control, a single command is sent, followed by a shorter "repeat" command. So, if you hold Volume Up, a single Volume Up command is sent, followed by multiple shorter "do it again" commands.
It's quite possible that, if the remote had weak batteries, it was inadvertently sending extra "repeat" commands... or otherwise doing odd things... It's also possible that the button stuck mechanically or the little processor inside the remote control malfunctioned... (And, if so, removing and replacing the batteries would "reset" it.)
It's also not at all unlikely for a phone app to simply malfunction (just as any other computer program can glitch)... It's also possible that it "got butt dialed"...
(I would probably close that app when I wasn't using it.)

On a positive note, this new LG OLED C1 is amazing. More useful information…. Getting clearer that hopefully, the simplest answer is the correct one. Last month I finished replacing all alkaline batteries in my HT remotes with Eneloops regular and heavier duty in my main control. Typical accepted knowledge about this is that alkaline is the way to go in such an application. I have found in recent years that alkalines are turning into crap and if you loose track they can leak out, damaging and in many cases destroying a hard to replace remote. I’ve got an Amazon Fire Stick that should not have fallen victim so quickly to such a thing….(but it did). Thanks to WD40, a jewelry screwdriver 🪛 and a bit of tenacity I saved it. Ironically the Firestick app. displays the batteries state of charge.

I had the same issue today for the first time with my new Emotiva RMC-1L and old Sony Bravia XBR-65X850C. I did have all the CEC options enabled in both the TV and RMC-1L as well as the Bravia Sync. I'd like to be able to turn everything on with a single press and the lack of a 12v trigger on the TV means I had to try CEC control.
After weeks of trying, I've completely given up on ARC and CEC now and am just using an empty HDMI 1 on the RMC-1L with a TOSLINK audio cable from the TV for TV sound instead of ARC and two macros on my Intesest remote to turn everything on and everything off with the press of one button.
