I've been holding off bringing this up, because I do love the sound and functionality of my XMC-2 oh so much, but I can't hold my tongue anymore. I am getting so sick of having to do a hard restart on the thing and it seems to be getting worse, like its gone from happening once a month to almost everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. Why would it get worse? It can be caused by a particular sound format, or it could be because one device didn't turn on in the correct sequence, or a partilcuar video pass thru. It seems to be random and I cant pinpoint exactly why its doing it.
If I had to guess, my gut feeling is Video pass thru signals are upsetting it, because Dolby Vision causes it do weird colours (until I invoke "match frame rate" on the Shield).
Sometimes it will be extremely slow to respond to remote commands especially volume commands.
I only have 2 hdmi inputs, an NVidia Shield and a cable box (Australian Foxtel).
I am running V2.0 software as I am not confident in switching to the new one.
Should I try this as a last resort?

Being on FW2.0 gives you several opportunities for possible improvement. On the Firmware thread you may read the intent of each firmware update and decide how you wish to proceed.
For myself, after I started using FW2.3, I went back to 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 to compare and decided 2.3 was best for me. FW2.3 has the most Bass Management boost of the bunch, but I was able to figure a workaround which works very well, so I've been happy since.

(You waited WAY longer than I would have….) Call Emo and don’t guess.
