Does XMC-1 with an analogue input output LFE to the sub? I just got my XPA-1 phono amp and no Subwoofer.
(yes, it's in "Stereo mode". (not reference or direct)

(not reference or direct) First of all, there is no LFE with analog stereo inputs. There can only be bass management or redirected bass. How is your speaker preset setup? Are the main speakers set as Small? Is the sub set up as Mono or Dual Mono? And BTW, Direct Mode will redirect bass if fronts are set to small with a sub connected and set as Mono/Dual Mono.

(not reference or direct) If the Fronts (Left/Right) main speaker channels are setup as Small, then there will be a crossover setting for them in Speaker Size settings which will send the bass controlled by Bass Management to the subwoofer channels. But if the Fronts are setup as Large, then there is no bass to send to subwoofers unless using Enhanced Bass in Emotiva processors which doubles the bass by sending extra bass below 80Hz to subwoofers in addition to the Large Fronts. Reference Stereo is only available when the Fronts are Large.

Gotta watch autocorrect!

Affirmative- Fronts must be "small"; that works. Thank you Gents.
ttoc, I've done the same

I liked the fronts set to Large and it's been a long time since I used Loudness. The Monitor Audio speakers can handle full range pretty well (when you have real power driving them). The CXA81 integrated sounded pretty darn good also playing the vinyl. I almost bought the Cambridge Solo preamp. I like what I'm hearing from the preamp. Using the stock Ortofon OM10 from Fluance, sounds better with the XPA-1. Got the headshell silver wires today to use the Shure M91E with JICO stylus and just finished mounting. Had to use 2 pair of spacers to get the cartridge parallel with the LP. I'll let you know in a few weeks what I think of the Shure/JICO combo.

I can set Reference Mode regardless of speaker size in the setup. However, Reference Mode just ignores what you've set and treats them as Large even if set to small.

When using the Emotiva PR-1 Remote and cycling through the available audio modes with all speakers setup as Small, "Reference Stereo" is not among the choices. However, when using the Remote App on my Mac, Reference Stereo is absolutely available, HOWEVER, the Fronts remain Small. So, what happens to the bass? It disappears. Weird, huh?

Hey Jeff what subwoofer are you using? If it has speaker level inputs that could be another way to have your sub work well with 2 channel no matter which mode or speaker size selection you use. Many subs can have dual connections one at line level that can be connected as LFE and another connection at speaker level to always work with your 2 front speakers.
Speaker level sub connections can work very well for 2 channel.

I'm pretty sure Reference Stereo Mode ignores speakers sizes and does no bass management whatsoever. The entire signal is sent to the front speakers. The manual even warns about using Reference Mode with small speakers because of the lack of bass management.

The manual even warns about using Reference Mode with small speakers because of the lack of bass management. 1. Yes, this is true. But I've never been able to select it when Fronts are setup as Small channels. Reference Stereo only show up under normal PR-1 remote control navigation when Fronts are setup as Large. Using the app, Reference Stereo is always available as an option. 2. Again, true. What's more is that even though the Fronts are shown in the Menu as being setup as Small channels they act as if setup as Large. 3. This is where I think the Emotiva Remote app has allowed something not intended, to be able to select Reference Stereo even while the Menu Speaker Size settings have the Fronts set as Small channels. This makes it even more important to not accidentally select Reference Stereo in the app when using speakers not capable of full range, because no matter what the setting is in Speaker Size, somehow Reference Stereo is not grayed out in the app. It really should be the same function and availability as when using the Emotiva PR-1 Remote.

I'm pretty sure Reference Stereo Mode ignores speakers sizes and does no bass management whatsoever. The entire signal is sent to the front speakers. The manual even warns about using Reference Mode with small speakers because of the lack of bass management. This is why speaker level subwoofer inputs will work very well with 2 channel, the subwoofer will receive the front speaker input and it won't matter what the settings are for mode or speaker size. So you can use Reference Mode with the subwoofer this way. But again this depends on the subwoofer. I have my two subs so one receives line level input from only the front channels, the other receives a combination of both line level LFE input for all channels and speaker level from only the front channels. This is because my Velodyne sub is capable of using dual inputs together, both line level inputs and speaker level inputs. This combo works very well for both HT and 2 channel.

Speaker level sub connections can work very well for 2 channel. The FB210 sub does have both high level in/outs and LFE input. When I bought my 1st set of M.A.s they were all 5.5" woofers and I ran the 3i (5.5") 2-way from the sub and it sounded very good, better that straight from the amp (Denon AVR5700)- made me a believer.
