I have been looking at ordering a better cooling system for my 3 units plus the Ubiquiti network manager installed in a rack. At first I was just going to go with the installed fans in the rack, but they are pretty damn loud. Next idea, let's swap those out for some nice ultra low dB fans. But I am starting to look at some other options, and trying to get an idea of whats sufficient, or should I go my standard mode and over engineer it? Rack is a NavePoint 18U, and with the two XPA's and the RMC-1, using up 12U. The Ubiquiti Dream Machine uses 1U. Means I have 5U to play with and was thinking of putting some of the 1U rack fan systems in, or some of the Component fan systems in. Questions: Curious to hear more about how this works. It appears I have solid room in there for either option, a few hundred bucks isn't going to break the bank. But are there any downsides to running three smaller systems vs one larger one up top? Noise? I do like the super clean look of all the items being rack mounted, but my guess is the sit on top component coolers are more effective. Here is a pic of the current setup, waiting on the RMC-1 to come back to me from Emotiva... FYI there is plenty of room in there, I can drop the lower unit 1U, and remove shelves. Anyone have some 4U rack rails to sell me? Emotiva has been out of stock forever!

It is nearly silent and I have to configured to only spin up as necessary. My AVR is on top of the Aircom, so the rear exhaust keeps the amp heat away from the AVR. I have never used cooling for any of my processors, although my rack is not in a closet.

If theres room and optimally a cutout on top of the unit I would go with the drop-in as I mentioned in the other thread. Thats all you'd need as the natural flow of heat is upwards. You wouldn’t have to use a fan to suck air into the box, it would naturally flow.

I agree a top fan would be the best option if there is a cutout for one.
Bummer about the 4RU rack ears. Using shelves will lose a little rack space vs rack ears. I have been using the 2RU rack fans from AC Infinity and I've been very pleased with them. Quiet and temperature activated with 3 speeds. The low speed is barely noticeable when no audio is playing, Speed 2 is a bit louder but not bad. High speed is louder still but I've never had mine switch to it no matter how hard I was driving the system. It's all in how you set up the activation temps. But I can't comment on the 1RU rack fans. A smaller fan has to turn faster to provide the same airflow so I would expect less air flow or more noise with the 1RU units. As far as replacement fans I would highly recommend Noctua. They also provide noise specs for all their fans.

Then I may test a pair of 2u’s, one above each XPA. Then see if I can put in those quieter muffins in the rack case and pull a draft up top for the whole case, and address the RMC at the same time.

Hey geebo just received the new Noctua fans, installed and wired up, amazingly quiet!! Thanks for the guidance on these! Glad you like them. Which ones did you get? Picked up these off Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09C6DQDNT/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1Not much better out there for sound levels! My Ubiquiti Dream Machine is louder writing to the hard drive. Figure these on the top of the rack case, and two of those 1U rack mount fan setups will keep the air circulating and pull the heat out the top nicely! Too bad these rack mount fan plates are out of stock too. Due back in stock end of august… RMC-1 is due back to me this Wednesday from Emotiva with the LCD fixed and the new phono and balanced xlr kits installed. Hope they surprise me and have some 4u rail kits show up in stock soon. Just ordered the Bluetooth kit today as well. Sooooo clooooooose…….
