I am searching for a surround speaker and come across Emotiva ERD-1 surround speakers. Do you guys think this can blend well with the Lsi 7 I have for my front? At first I wanted to get the LsiFx but it is really hard to find nice used one with good price. So I thought of the bipole Emotiva ERD-1.
Do you think it will match with the tonal characteristic of the Lsi7? Please share your thoughts and comments on my decision.
Might also consider Emotiva ERM-6.2 for the center channel since I still have not found a nice used Lsic. Price seems kinda of tempting.
Thanks.

I am not a big fan of mixing brands and series of speakers. I am a firm believer in timbre/voiced matched speakers all around. I see you must realize that the Emotiva line of speakers are a great bargain at factory direct to buyer prices. All the Emotiva Vance Dickason's design speakers are 4 ohm speakers with very high power handling and all have the identical silk dome matching tweeters. The ERM-6 is the slightly bigger brother of the ERM-1 which I own along with my ERD-1. I suggest you do exactly what I did. I ordered a single ERM-1 and tested it A/B against one of my front Axiom speakers. It is simple to move them out in the room away from the wall side by side and compare them on the same sound source with one speaker as left, speaker A and the other speaker as left, speaker B. You will be able to compare the sound of the LSi7 and the ERM-6.2 by simply switching back and forth while adjusting for the volume level difference. If you find you prefer the ERM-6.2 over the LSi7 or think they are equal in sound quality then you could buy 3ea ERM-6.2's for LCR (the center ERM-6.2 goes on its side if you prefer) and 2ea ERD-1's for the two surrounds for a total of $906. The ERD-1's are of course voice matched to the ERM-6.2. If you feel the you still like the LSi7 but find the ERM-6.2 a reasonable match for the center then just keep the ERM-6.2 and order the ERD-1's. Otherwise simply return one ERM-6.2. The ERM-6.2 is slightly larger and 6 lbs heavier than the LSi7. It is very similar to the ERM-1 since they have the same tweeter and are identical except for enclosure size and two 6.5 mid/woofers in the 6.2 versus two 5.25 mid/woofers in the ERM-1. www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/bookshelf/emotiva-er-5-0-speaker-system-review(My only complaint about this review is the guy has to be blind. my wife and I both think the satin black finish is very classy looking. The grill magnet was redesigned and works great.) emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=speakerreviews&action=display&thread=5476

How would you guys describe Emotiva speakers by the way? In terms of its sound characteristic. Also what are Emotiva speakers comparable to? Can you say it is comparable to Polk speakers? I don't find many reviews about Emo speakers so I am kind of hesitant to jump on it. If you guys have links to their speaker reviews, pls let me know.
Yeah, I was kind of unsure if my Lsi7 can be mixed with emo surround since they also differ in the frequency but emo price is so tempting.

Ultra natural and neutral sounding with no hint if brightness, edginess or the irritation of many metal drivers. Beautiful upper bass and lower midrange extremely complimentary to human voices. Very tight bass with superb transient response. Exceptionally smooth and tireless highs. Listen to all day with absolutely no fatigue. Very low distortion combined with maximum power handling. Optimum off axis response. Amazing dynamic slam when driven by amp with plenty of power into 4 ohms The best sound I have ever heard in any dynamic speaker at anywhere near the price, period. Very few speakers have received a five star performance rating from Audioholics. www.hometheaterhifi.com/home-theater-speakers/618-emotiva-ert-83-tower-speakers.htmlwww.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/bookshelf/emotiva-er-5-0-speaker-system-reviewemotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=speakerreviewsI hope other will chime in here, especially those with listening experience with both Emo and Polk speakers. My limited experience with Polks leads me to say that the Emotivas have a more silky smooth high end and no slight upper bass/low mid hump like some of the Polks I have heard.

FYI! The ERD will go up in price beginning in 2010 so the holiday price today is $100 less than the price will be in January 2010. I have only heard good news and very good news on the ERD surrounds.

I've owned the LSi15's for years; at one point, I had a complete surround system with LSi9's for surrounds & LSiC for center. The Emotiva's are excellent, but they do not really match the Polk's. They are more neutral and dynamic, where the Polk's are a little warmer and smoother. Not a godawful match, but not worth it. Although the tweeters are not identical, Polk FXiA6's or FXiA4's blend better.

I should note that going all-Emotiva is also a fine option. Since you are only 1 pair of speakers into the system, you could sell them on Audiogon or something and reinvest the money in the rest of the system. Chuckienut's suggested upgrade path is a fine one!

Scottl, So you think going all Emotiva's speakers and sell my Lsi7 is a better way than mixing it with just the ERD-1? However, how are they different in class between Emo's speakers vs Polk? I was told that Polk Lsi7 tweeters are brighter than the Emotiva ERM 6.2 speakers. Again I notice there is ERM 6.2 and 6.3, which one should I get?? Again any inputs or advise is appreciated.

Without knowing your room & preferences in detail, I can only guess, but my guess would be that it would be a good choice if you are most concerned with home theater performance. If you really love your LSi7's for music, maybe you should stick with them and get the Polk surrounds. The 6.3's will play louder, lower, and with greater dynamic range than the 6.2's. They should also be more articulate and clear, but the 6.2's have some very devoted fans. I compared the 8.3's to the Polk LSi15's, which may be somewhat helpful: emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=speakers&action=display&thread=6821#101714
