Agreed that the top models need to go lower. I don't mind sealed (I would prefer it if it means tighter and more controlled), Hsu seems to have got great performance from the ULS-15 in a sealed box. So if dual 12"s can match the range, we should be good. I would accept the box being a bit bigger if it's needed for better performance.

Not to bring up possible competition but SVS for me has been a great example of a company that has made excellent Internet direct subs of very high price/performance. Here is a quote from their SB12-Plus sub (SB = small box) which is a smaller enclosure alternative to their larger enclosure PB12-Plus. They honestly mention the difference is performance due to the enclosure size.
"..........While any "micro" subwoofer is inherently a bit of a compromise, from the standpoint of physics... it's indeed very small, just under 14" on all sides with grill off....So, if you can "afford" one of our bigger subs... from the standpoint of the larger floor space requirement ... by all means, consider something of a similar price class, such as the PB12-Plus, or even one that's less expensive like the (large) new PB12-NSD.....If you need room rattling power, the ultimate depth, AND want a small footprint too? Then our exclusive space-saving Powered Cylinder subs should be on your short list to evaluate. Few brands will be honest about this point: "size matters" ... with subwoofers. Even if perfectly designed, no truly small sub like the SB12-Plus will compete with an equally well-designed large subwoofer (particularly if it's one of our super-efficient vented subwoofers such as those mentioned just above)......small is, well, BIG in many audio fans' homes. Many have long clamored for an SVS sub that's small enough to slip by their "significant other", or be the perfect bass source for smaller venues like bedrooms or office audio systems. And frankly, even for long-time audio nuts like us at SVS, there's something undeniably cool about a diminutive sub, like this one, filling even mid-sized rooms with low bass that's accurate, deep, and with enough guts to keep you planted to your seat....Get a big SVS sub if you find one that fits your lifestyle. But get the SB12-Plus if big bass has got to be small to make it into your audio system, and home....Small isn't the compromise it once was, now that the SB12-Plus is here..........."
An honest assessment of a company explaining that their smaller sub is no longer such a compromise compared to other small subs and offers very good performance in a small package. However subtle, it is clear that for the best performance you need a large enclosure sub if you have the room.
OK, I've clearly voiced my opinion. Now back to humoring the troops.

I have been using the SVS SB12-plus due to it's small form factor. Now that I'm getting a dedicated theater, a big ass sub is definitely an option. I'll have to wait and see what Emotiva does.

This looks like a neat little sub. I've been the happy owner of several SVS subs, including both the larger cylinders and the smaller ported boxes, currently the PB10-NSD. If I were starting out, the Emotiva subs might be an option but I can't currently see the argument for swapping the SVS sub for an Emotiva one. However, I look forward to hearing about how they perform.
I find it neat to see a company branching out like this - it makes good business sense to take advantage of already having in place the supply chain, technical expertise, distribution and the brand loyalists.

I would actually prefer the satin finish of the other speakers to veneer too. Please, oh please, use the satin finish on the ERS models. Yes, the ERS subs will still have the satin finish. This is all too odd...we've seriously heard people complain about the satin finish for over a year now... Maybe its time to consider manufacture speakers/subs in different colors and finish. ;D Love to see them in Piano Gloss Black or Rosenut. emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=speakers&thread=6431&page=1This remember me the history of Henry Ford that manufactured only black cars early the 1920. Then realized that in order to boots their sales they need to offer their cars in different colors. See last two paragraph of the link below. www.modelt.ca/background.html

True, but can you envision it with a blue LED inside? (Dimmable, of course)

A bump for the physical dimensions, curious to see if this would fit where I'd like it to.

The Ultra subs will be available in the black ash finish as pictured, and also in a cherry finish. I do not have a cherry version to photograph yet. These are the first of an entire line of Ultra speakers that will be showing up next year, also veneer finishes, in cherry and black ash. This line will be an amazingly priced line, perhaps almost half what our current speakers are. The Ultra speakers will be ported (by customer demand), and will all be full range. Two different towers, a center, two bookshelf models, and surrounds. All full range, all ported. The 'Reference' or X line that we already have will continue with their current look and design, perhaps updated at some point. So, there.

I'll have the weight in a bit...the subs are in the theater, and Big Dan is having a conference with a client in there at the moment.

Rear kind of sucks for bookshelf/cabinet placing.
