I'm looking for tower speakers and want to spend at most $1500. I dont have a sub yet so I want some good low end punch. So far I've looked at the Emo 8.3, Aperion 6T, TSC TST3.
Anything else that I should keep my eye open for?
Bckground: I'm looking to start my HT with a 3.0 system. I'll probably build a sub later. All the stuff I have audio wise is my fathers from 1992. Bose Acoustimass system, NHT surrounds, and the Sony. The problem I have is I'm using the stereo outs on the Oppo, so I'm hardly getting the best sound blu-ray has to offer. The Sony is 120w x 2 into 8ohms though(or 75w x 3 for LCR in ProLogic mode).

Why not go to a local hi-fi store, and listen to whatever brands they have in your price range?

Audio Video Lifestyles in Fort Wayne, Indiana
I think all they carry is B&W and I figured that was out of my price range.

Still go and check some stuff out so that you get a feel for what you like. You could always go used to save some cash.
Some other brands to check out would be
Paradigm Magnepan Monitor Audio LSA (used) Klipsch AV123
All of those should have something in your price range

Well I do not own these but I am considering getting a pair. The Salk SongTowers have quite a following. They do start at $1695 which is over your 1500 budget but they just might be worth the extra $200. www.salksound.com/speakers_songseries_songtowerqwt_pricing.shtmlI think you can find Paradigm Studio 60's for around $1500/pair. I have always liked the Paradigm sound. Really, the best way is to listen to as many different speakers as you can. Speakers are one of the most important part of your system. Just remember that they will almost always sound different in different rooms.

So is the $2000 for your front three speakers and a new receiver?

The Sony is 120w x 2 into 8ohms though(or 75w x 3 for LCR in ProLogic mode). I THINK FOR $2000 YOU HAVE VERY LIMITED OPTIONS TO GO. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING GOOD IT WILL BE EXPENSIVE. I DON'T SIT DEEP IN AUDIO ELECTRONICS SO I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT WILL BE THE BEST CHOICE. BUT LET ME TELL YOU THIS. EMOTIVA ERT-8,3 TOWERS MADE ME HAPPY. THEY GIVE ME MORE QUALITY THAN I CAN USE FOR NOW WITH EQUIPMENT I HAVE. THE SOUND IS CLEAN, SOUND STAGE IS HUGE AND THE BASS IS DEEPER THAN I THOUGHT IT WILL BE. OR PUT IT DIFFERENT WAY. I CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC FOR HOURS OR WATCH MOVIE AFTER MOVIE AND NOT FEEL TIRED OF IT. WITH OTHER THINGS I HAVE A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO I FEEL ALMOST PHYSICAL PAIN AFTER 30 MIN. THE BEST PART IS I POWER THEM WITH VERY WEEK AND OLD YAMAHA RECEIVER. I CAN'T WAIT TO HOOK THEM UP WITH GOOD EMOTIVA POWER AMP. I JUST HAVE TO WAIT FOR EMOTIVA TO RELEASE XMC-1. THEN 3 X XPA-1 AND 1 x XPA-2 WILL FOLLOW. TRY TO GET IN TOUCH WITH SOMEBODY WHO HAVE THEM IN YOUR AREA AND LISTEN TO THEM. YOU WILL BE AMAZED. I ALSO CONSIDERED PARADIGM STUDIO 100. THEY ARE GOOD BUT EACH OF THEM COST ALMOST AS MUCH AS A PAIR OF 8.3. BECAUSE OF THE PRICE I GOOSED ERT-8.3, AND UNLESS I GET REACH I'LL STICK WITH THEM FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

+1 on the Revel F12's. cost around $1200 for the pair. Great Bass with the two 8 inch drivers. Awesome mid-range and pretty dang good treble. Definitely one to put on your audition list. Only downside is the 1980's box speaker look. Looks better "naked"(w/o grills). The new Emo Ultra towers will be out later this year and at $899 a pair they would be definitly worth a look as well.

Why waste your money on tower speakers? Put the money into less expensive bookshelves and a dedicated sub...........better imaging, better frequency response, and much better low octave bass.

Not a bad suggestion since the OP was talking about needing a sub too. Not to mention it would open up a few more choices.

And to add, full range towers bass response due to small 8" drivers are still limited in frequency extension to room placement. With a dedicated sub or subs, you have the ability to move the monitors out to their optimal imaging locations while allowing the subs to be placed in proper room loading locations to increase bass extension and detail. Its a no brainer. Monitors coupled with a sub or dedicated subs of similiar quality will always outperform a stand alone tower if set up properly.

I agree that you may want to think about bookshelfs and a sub. I'm pretty much a die hard rock guy who thought the only way to go was full tower speakers. The bigger the better That is until recently... after auditioning speakers in the $1500-$2000 (B&W and Paradigm) I just couldn't find anything that I liked. Mostly too bright and no real bottom end. I ended up stumbling upon Angstrom speakers quite by accident (Canadian company) and ended up buying a full 5.1 system for about the same price as the speakers I was auditioning. Plus there was a lot less fatigue and I was completely surprised that the sub blended so well with the bookshelfs. I didn't think it was even possible haha.

I agree, I have the ERM-6.3s + sub and apart from the sub needing an upgrade (it's only a 10" that does not go low enough) the sound is very nice and very smooth (integrates well).
For the saving versus towers you can get better speakers or sub or amps or whatever.
Mounting the L/R is probably the hardest part but there are stands out there.

So is the $2000 for your front three speakers and a new receiver? Well I was hoping to keep my receiver to save some money. I just hooked up some speakers to the center and surround channels and it looks like those might not be working anymore, hey it is from 1992. Anyways with 120w x 2 it should still be strong enough to power some decent speakers. It has a sub out but I cant find the bass management anywhere in the OSD or in the manual. I just run the speakers full range(large) from the Oppo and let the acoustimass bass module sort it all out with its crossover. That was one of my reasons for wanting to go with towers. But maybe if I go with bookshelves I would have enough money to get a new receiver and sub. $1000 for the speakers, $500 for the receiver and $500 for the sub. My only concern with that is that a $500 receiver wont have the power that I have currently. Nor would it have 5.1 out if I ever wanted to amplify down the road. What do you guys think?

If you wanted you could keep your current receiver add an amp. You would likely get more benefits from that than buying a new receiver in that price range.
A nice pair of bookshelfs with good sub and a UPA-2 would be a good start to your setup.

The pre-outs on my receiver are only for the surrounds and subwoofer, so I wouldnt be able to add an amp. But if the sub came with line level inputs I should be able run the speakers as large and use the subs crossover to take care of the bass management right?
