Watched recently: Hugo ..... 5 stars ..... Wonderful family movie by the master Martin Scorsese. Classic movie making. 5 star sound and video, superbly recorded center channel, excellent test for center speaker. The Grey ..... 2 stars ..... If you can put up with the phony Hollywood overly dramatic plot, high school level script, unreal looking wolves and some shallow talk about God and death, you might like this movie. One has to watch the ending credits thru to the very end to get the supposedly clever real ending. I like survival movies but this one was a big disappointment. BTW, this is a great example of a poorly and under recorded center channel track. If you think your center speaker is not the best because you have to turn up the volume and then you get blasted when the wolves attack, don't blame your center speaker. I hate having to raise the center gain because the recording engineer screwed up. On the contrary, the soundtrack from the movie Hugo is perfect and my Emo ERM-1 did a superb job on the dialog matching the level of my R&L ERM-1's perfectly. Check a number of movies for dialog gain before you blame your center speaker. Ponyo (2008) ..... 2 stars ..... Beautiful color scenes by Japanese animation master, Hayao Miyazaki, but strangely weird story. Don't waste your time unless you are on some very heavy drugs. Bernie ..... 5 stars ..... Brilliant satiric, dark and dry comedy! Comments from the locals was the perfect touch and they continue right thru to the end of the credits. I didn't previously know Jack Black (or Tenacious D) from Adam, but this is an academy award performance from Jack Black. Not recommended for trailer trash or folks from East Texas. The Artist ..... 5 stars ..... (Five 2011 Academy Awards) Brilliant salute to the silent movie era and the new talkies. Great Academy Award acting performances while mostly silent and filmed in black and white. Beautifully crafted nostalgic return to the movies of the 20's and 30's. Love story with a happy ending. Hooray For Hollywood! The Big Lebowski (1998) ..... 2 stars ..... I have been hearing great praise about how funny this movie is for years. I know this will get me run out of the Lounge, but both my wife and I thought this was very non-funny except for maybe two or three scenes. The rest was a script filled with mostly the words "dude' and "fu*k." We couldn't wait for this one to end. Almost painful movie to endure. Sorry folks.

Watched "Law Abiding Citizen" (A film from 2010) last night on Blu-ray. Wow! - talk about a violent movie!. Taking place in the present day Philadelphia, a brilliant gadget technician (who is later found out to be in high demand by the CIA), suffers a home invasion, and brutal murder of his wife and young daughter. The perps are handled poorly by the justice system, such that one gets death row, and the other walks after ten years. This does NOT sit well with our hero! The rest of the film is an intricate revenge piece against not only the two perps, but also the system that doled out such light punishment for such a vicious crime. Enter our hero who carries out a series of inventive and techy murders of his own. Not a real sympathetic character, unless you try to see the system through his eyes. He's lost everything, has nothing left to live for but anger and revenge. A lost soul all around, and sad to watch. NOT for the squeamish! Okay, here are my ratings: Movie story interest: 4.0 out of 5 stars. Beware the repeated and graphic violent scenes! Video quality: 4.5 out of 5 stars. Aspect ratio is 2.40:1The video is very sharp throughout, with excellent close up detail, and very good focus in long shots as well - near reference quality! Audio quality: 4.5 out of 5 stars, (Dolby True HD 5.1). Excellent special effects throughout, along with a well done musical score. Overall - 4.0 out of 5.0 stars, recommended as an excellent and intricate drama, but beware the graphic violent scenes. Total length, 1 hour and 49 minutes. Attachments:

Watched "A Nightmare Before Christmas" (A Tim Burton film from 1993, the 2008 Blu-ray release) last night. I thought this was appropriate, seeing as Halloween is just around the corner, and Mrs. mad Norseman was (finally) game for an animated movie - so there ya go! This is an incredible movie. The 'star', "Jack Skelington" is bored with all the usual Halloween things in Halloween land, so he ventures out by himself and stumbles upon the tree portal to the Christmas holiday. From that point on, Jack is infatuated with Christmas, and wants to bring it back to Halloween land. But none of the Halloween characters (including Jack) REALLY understand Christmas enough to pull it off, and all kinds of problems ensue... Okay, here are my ratings: Movie story interest: 4.0 out of 5 stars. A terrific, topical (for this season!) wonderfully done animated feature. Fun story, entertaining throughout. Video quality: 5.0 out of 5 stars, (Aspect ratio 1.66:1). The video in this animated feature is in one word - SUPERB! If you're looking for reference quality video to show off your home theater flat panel - this one will do it! VERY sharp in nearly all scenes (except where foggy was deliberate). Audio quality: 5.0 out of 5 stars, (Dolby True HD 7.1). Again, reference quality all the way which is somewhat surprising for a movie originally released as long ago as 1993! The sound quality is top notch, and the surround effect is impressive and distinct in all scenes. Dynamics are wonderful! (Caveat: being an older movie, it defaults to lossey Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, so you MUST go into the menu and purposely select Dolby True HD 7.1 for playback...I've noticed that more recent films automatically default to the best audio, but not this one - so consider yourself forewarned!). Overall rating - 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. HIGHLY recommended as an excellent animated film with a fun story line. A very worthwhile way to spend (only) an hour and 16 minutes! Attachments:

^The soundtrack (CD) is has some slightly different versions of the songs, the original ending, and the original voice over at the beginning and end by Patrick Stewart.

Watched "Get Low" last night on Blu-ray, a Robert Duvall & Bill Murray film from 2010. A very interesting movie about an elderly hermit who's been hiding out from his own past 'transgressions' in the Tennessee back woods, and everyone aware of him, thinks he's insane and dangerous. The acting was excellent throughout. Not a comedy - despite Bill Murray's presence, so don't expect that. Taking place around 1920 or so, Felix Bush (the old hermit, Duvall) is hiding from his own devils, and his involvement with an old flame...can't let on much more without a big fat 'spoiler alert', so suffice it to say that he wants to make amends after over 40 years, and tell all. In order to do so, he wants a 'Funeral Party' in his honor, and hires the Quinn Funeral Home to arrange it for him (Murray is the Funeral Home's owner). Arrangements are made, and everyone with a story about the hermit Felix Bush shows up to tell his part, and take part in a drawing to give away his land. There's much more but I'll stop there. The story dragged in parts, but overall a great tale, with a worthwhile ending. (Mrs. Mad Norseman liked it, but also thought it got slow in a couple spots. But stay with it, because the story is worth holding out for). Okay, here are my ratings: Movie story interest: 3.5 out of 5 stars. A good story with a few unexpected twists and turns. Video quality: 4.5 out of 5 stars, (Aspect ratio 2.35:1). The video sharp throughout with excellent detail. The outdoor shots are simply gorgeous, and close ups show every hair and pour on the faces - just what we Hi-Def fans want, right? Audio quality: 4.0 out of 5 stars, (DTS HD Master Audio 5.1). There's a little gunfire, and some good audio in a couple crowd scenes, but other wise its very clear dialog and ambiance - no problems. Very little use of the surrounds, but for those aforementioned crowd scenes. Really, its all you need and perfectly suits this film. Overall rating – 4.0 out of 5.0 stars, Recommended as a very interesting drama with some great 'human situation' plot twists. Another worthwhile way to spend an hour and 43 minutes! Attachments:

Watched "The Hunger Games", The first of a three part series, from early 2012, last night on Blu-ray, (next two not yet released). Elsewhere on this forum there's thread dedicated to trashing this movie, but I must say that I thought it was quite good! The story line is pretty disturbing though... Taking place in a post-democracy North America, the continent has been divided up into 12 "Districts". Each district appears to specialize in something - farming, coal mining, etc., but all are dirt poor, and oppressed by a very small privileged elite group occupying "The Capital". (BTW, The denizens of "The Capital" look a lot like refugees from a certain well known San Fransisco "pride" parade! ). Anyway, every year the Capital forces "The Hunger Games" on the Districts who each must provide a male & female "tribute" to fight to the death in these games for the amusement of those in the Capital. Only one can survive/win. Any more and I'm giving too much away. Popular with the teens and young adults (who have probably already given up on a decent future maybe, so it appeals to them!), my young adult kids liked it, but so did Mrs. Mad Norseman and myself! (Go figure...). Well done story telling, and very well acted and filmed. Audio & video details below: Okay, here are my ratings: Movie story interest: 4.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent acting, good story telling, and a followable script (I was expecting much worse after reading all the negative reviews elsewhere on this forum, but maybe my expectations were lowered to the point where anything about awful would seem great? But no, that wasn't it. Video quality: 4.5 out of 5 stars, (Aspect ratio 2.40:1). The video is sharp as a tack, detailed and full of vibrant color throughout - except for some of the deliberately subdued scenes in the poorer Districts. Very near the best you'll see on Blu-ray! Audio quality: 5.0 out of 5 stars, (DTS HD Master Audio 7.1). Wonderful in all aspects, in all scenes. Couldn't ask for a better reference quality surround audio. From dialog, to explosions (not many of those), to subtle forest, or arena sound effects - its all here, and its all done superbly! Overall rating – 4.5 out of 5.0 stars, Recommended as an excellent drama and adventure, but I would not recommend this film for children under 14 or so because of the disturbing situations, fates and outcomes of these other wise innocent characters. So despite 'reservations' expressed elsewhere here, I'd say its definitely worth the 2 hours and 22 minutes of your time. Attachments:
