The BDP-83 was always going to be my choice of player when I switched to blu-ray (I currently own 400 plus DVD's so have been slow to convert), but then they released their Special Edition with the ESS Sabre DAC's which are wonderful DAC's from everything I've read. My first (hopeful) thought when I heard of the SE was that I would be able to connect my computer to USB port of the SE and thereby access their Sabre DAC's. Oppo have since confirmed that this is not an option, nor will it ever be due to licensing issues.
However, I have since purchased a budget DAC and was wondering if this could possibly work:
USB from my iMac >>> USB IN on DAC >>> Stereo Analogs OUTS from my DAC >>> Stereo Analog IN's of the SE.
A) Would this work first of all (can't see why it won't)? B) If it does (SE accepts signal), would the SE/Sabre DAC's then take over D/A duties and pass that signal onto my receiver?
I understand I would be sacrificing my DAC in this chain, but would be worth it (to me) to gain access to such a top quality DAC/universal CD, DVD-Audio, SACD & blu-ray player.
What do you think?

THe best sounding source units use Burr Brown DACs I have always found............but anyway, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? What source/transport needs to use a better DAC? WHat about your pre/pro, what do you have?

Add blu-ray player and upgrade DAC. Universal CD, DVD-Audio, SACD player would just be a bonus. And then add UPA-1's and an XMC-1 at some point to complete the package/upgrade.

I think you are mistaken; the SE doesnt have analog inputs. I think your best bet would be to just get the Oppo BDP83 and then get a good DAC, something like the Music Hall 25.2 DAC, which can be had for 450 used on audiogon. That would equal the price of a SE, produce better sound and give you more flexibilty.

Unless you are wanting to use the oppo for 2 channel stuff too. The se is supposed to have stellar two channel performance. I just bought one off Ebay. Gonna use HDMI out to my PRE/PRO and the 2 channel analog outs to my USP1 running my separate 2 channel system. One player that will work for 2 systems! My situation is probably a bit different though. All my gear is in one spot and supports speakers through out the house.

FWIW, the main reason I bought an Oppo BDP-83 was for it's image processing and how great it makes my DVD collection look. BR looks great and now my DVDs nearly as good as BR. The audio from the standard 83 is very good, but I still prefer my old Sony for CD listening, it's got a richer less etched sound to it. Good luck!
