I bought a Yamaha DVD-S1800 for the SACD feature. This will strictly be for both SACD/CD analog music. What is the best way to hook it up for SACD? 5.1 analog or HDMI? Here's the way I was going to set it up. Tell me if this will work. I have a Harmony remote so I will set up two "activities" for music. One "SACD" and another "Analog" and rename the input on my receiver to reflect it. When switched to "SACD" it would play via the HDMI. When switched to "Analog" it will play via 2ch mixed. Yes, no?

What if you hooked it up with HDMI but also hooked up all 5 or 7 analog inputs for your analog source. I've done that before. When playing 2 channel CDs, only the left and right channels were working but with a SACD, all 5 or 7 channels were working.
Just my thoughts.

Now am I understanding this right that, with SACD, you have to use the HDMI to get DSD and if you use the 5.1/7.1 analog then it's PCM and does it really make a difference in the sound quality?

If you use the analog inputs it's analog. The conversion from digital would then happen inside the player. Which I'm guessing would be the best way to do it since this player uses the Burr Brown DACs.

I use my Oppo BDP-83 for Blu-ray and SACD. I have it hooked up via 7.1 analog inputs, since my Outlaw processor does not have HDMI connections. Sounds pretty damn sweet though.

Sounds pretty damn sweet though. you are correct amino and i agree with you. Oppo players support DSD output via HDMI or analog multichannel as well as over the dedicated stereo analog output. or of course you could let it come out as pcm but, with DSD support why would you? I have tried it all three ways with my current 805 and it sounds incredible like amino said! Oh, tomorrow i'm getting the Onkyo PR-SC5507P and it to supports DSD like my current 805 and I expect it to continue to sound incredible, if not more so with this new processor. I'll have to wait and see over the weekend!

Which I'm guessing would be the best way to do it since this player uses the Burr Brown DACs. Burr-Brown is just a name. They make many different DACs of varying quality, same as every other manufacturer. Just because it's a Burr-Brown DAC doesn't mean it's a good Burr-Brown DAC.

I'll have to look into that. The player is a Yamaha DVD-S1800 and my receiver is a Yamaha RX-V665.

I'll be interested to know if you think your system sounds better with the oppo doing the decoding or the Onkyo 5507.

I'll be interested to know if you think your system sounds better with the oppo doing the decoding or the Onkyo 5507. I let the receiver 805 or in my new setup as of today the 5507 do the decoding for all lossless formats because of course i want that vanity light lit on the 5507 screen. for SACD's it's DSD from the oppo to the 5507 which supports DSD via HDMI. I will also have connected the 2 channel dedicated analog out from the oppo (still DSD) to the XLR dedicated stereo input on the 5507. the oppo supports DSD out via HDMI & Analog or you can unselect DSD and have it decoded onboard and sent out as PCM. of course, with the choice between the two, I prefer DSD, that is what SACD's are mastered in and that's what i want. that is one of the big reasons i went with the 5507 was for DSD, I had it with my 805 receiver and didn't want to give it up. keep me/us posted buddy!

So it goes back to my original post. SACD for DSD will be via HDMI and CD will be set as analog. I never did get my answer on the Burr Brown comment, but I have been doing some research and I think for $79.00 I made a good purchase in the Yamaha.

I think it depends on pre/pro's DAC. I was trying both ways with my setup and end up with bit-stream through HDMI. It sounds way better then through analog output. Don't know about OPPO BDP-83SE but standard 83's DAC doesn't impress me.
