Wow, very good and interesting read indeed. I would love to see more tests like this. The results could be quite surprising. Great link.

Nice read. I enjoy doing some blind testing myself if at all possible. The results are really surprising when doing blind tests.

What I take from that article is that speaker quality outweighs source quality.
I wish more blind tests were published, I am always curious about the actual benefits of the more eccentric "audiophile" solutions (i.e. "top hat" weights, master clocks-what do those things do anyway?, $29,000 cables etc.).
I know that alot of audio is dependent on perception, but I do question whether all the things that claim to offer sound quality improvements actually deliver.

although it didn't appear to affect this test, it should be noted that this is a real piss-poor example of a DBx. they broke one of the basic rules of a double blind. anytime you have a person in the front of the room participating in the experiment, in plain view of the people judging the system, you are going to introduce some kind of bias. even if the people are trying to be careful not to. facial expressions and body language are almost impossible to hide. i would also think that in trying to test a whole 'system' against another, it would be easy for, say, a cable manufacturer to say "well our cable doesn't match well with that high dollar preamp" blah blah blah. which is why in most DBx. i have seen, only one system component is changed and the rest of the system remains the same as a control.

I agree with ratso in that there shouldn't have been human interaction - did the testers know what systems were being used? Did they know the people testing them? I feel there are too many variables in that particular presentation of that experiment to really come up with a conclusion on our own. However, I have been a part of A-B comparison things like that (and yes, humans were doing the switching), and at some point in my life I was sold on the idea of upgrading cables. I think it's easy to get influenced my sonic details we think we didn't hear before... hell, I just bought a TT because I wanted the warmth of vinyl back into my life! Whatever!!! (I do love it though...)

Alright, the Jack Daniels is kicking in - time for bed, and typos to stop... "...influenced by sonic details..." gotta go flip the LP...
