I like th RJ45- WAY more possibilities tha even the USB- but I think I would put BOTH on there. USB for those that dont have network at home or network near their audio gear- gasp!! I would NOT supply the memory sticks unless a customer was that brain dead as to not understand what one is. You can get them anywhere, and they are cheap, and can be used for so much more. I would put updates on the web for automatic download by ethernet/rj45 to the unit and/or have the " usb memory key" option too. I am NOT going to suggest the 8-track cassette option as I feel that technology may be slowly fading...

Gentlemen, Before this gets into a full blown name calling battle of words, take it off the board or exchange PM's. As I said in another thread, the name calling and personal attacks ARE going to stop. As a new moderator on this board I'm not going to allow the negativity to continue. So please respect your fellow Lounge members by not taking the OP's thread in another direction. Thank you... ........................LC

Well-said LCS!
On upgrade methods, I do like a solution that does not require direct connection of the pre/pro to a PC...such as a USB flash, an SD card, or other insertable storage media or an RJ-45 connection to the net. Overall, I'd prefer an RJ-45 connection ideally. It works great on my BluRay.

I overheard Dan and Lonnie talking this weekend with a few Axpona Expo show attendees, saying that the next generation of processors would most likely be updated in this manner, pushing an update from the home base. This should please many.

Ethernet would be great. My PS3 and my Panasonic TV do firmware updates via ethernet. My Integra pre/pro has an ethernet port, but it is for home automation, not streaming files or firmware updates. I'm pretty new at the home theater thing and I have no idea how I would use the ethernet for automation. I did hook it up and it has an ip address, etc, but I don't know what to use the thing for on my pre/pro.

teedub21, Ethernet can be used by home control systems such as Crestron, AMX or Control 4. Unless you have a system such as those, Ethernet on the Integra is not of much use I'm afraid.

I believe it was stated that the XMC specs are now pretty much set in stone so I doubt we'll see changes at this point.

This should please many. Many of us are quite happy with the older generations of Emotiva Pre/Pro's. But if Emotiva doesn't have firmware upgrades available in a simpler, more user friendly method, they will lose more customers than they already are. It's 2010, and there are a lot of devices out there that already have this ability. With all the problems the UMC-1 has exhibited in this regard, you know a more complicated device like the XMC-1 will require firmware updates. Sorry, but for all the waiting customers have had to endure, it would be a travesty to come out with another product that would put the user through this pain. Come on guys, they shipped the UMC-1, even BEFORE they had a process to apply firmware updates by the customer. They had to quickly come up with a method to do updates, because of all the problems! That's not a good business model. On the other hand, if a plug and play USB update process came about, I think most people would be happy! Weigle2

agreed(still) on the rj45....its the ONLY way to go for simplicity. if you want to next level this stuff, put in the "in" rj45 port and also have 2-3 more "hub" slots too so you can hook up all your PS3,oppo, tv thru this unit. I know this goes outside nomal current stuff on your average receiver, but why be normal.

I also would prefer ethernet update ability and DLNA compliant in the XMC-1

I know it would reduce the clutter like I have behind my components. Wireless would be even better!!!

If the processor can reduce that clutter, even better. As for including wireless, I am not sure which technology obsoletes equipment faster: wireless or HDMI. I think that I would prefer to use my own wireless access point so that I can stay current there. I do not think this would fit on the back of a 3RU processor, so this would not work for the XMC. Maybe if Emotiva created a 4RU processor. Since HDMI is getting Ethernet, it makes sense for the processor to connect an RJ-45 to the HDMI ports.

How about HDMI 1.4 which includes an ethernet channel.

I agree that update via USB stick would be preferable. Also I would like to have a "stealth" mode, eith absoluteley NO lights.
