agreed(still) on the rj45....its the ONLY way to go for simplicity. if you want to next level this stuff, put in the "in" rj45 port and also have 2-3 more "hub" slots too so you can hook up all your PS3,oppo, tv thru this unit. I know this goes outside nomal current stuff on your average receiver, but why be normal. Considering 4 or 8 port Ethernet (Gbit) switches can be had for very little money, I think that would be a GREAT option.

+1 on the lights - especially the power lights. Lights controllable from the remote works for me.

Considering they're so cheap, why would anybody be keen to add non-core functionality to an already complex device? It's just one more thing that can go wrong.

In this case it would provide some nice cable management.

In this case it would provide some nice cable management. this yes they are cheap too, but keeping things neat and tidy is always a good thing. Maybe make it a module. even a optional part...think Cisco switch here with its optional, slide in modules. PS- make it 10/100/1000 to help future proof it! I know there is little chance of the built in ethernet switch, but still, lets add the ONE port for upgrades/streaming at least...

i would agree this would make updates easier but would like to see a RJ45 jack on the back of the XMC.... ;D Me three, for the USB functionality mentioned above. What are you looking for with the RJ45 connectivity? Internet radio, Pandora? Can you elaborate? Thanks. Weigle2 with the RJ45 jack on the back it would make updates a lot easier IMO. I have a Sony BD S550 with a RJ45 port on the back and all I do is click on update and wait until it is done. I would also like to stream music from my pc.

FYI: "The Cisco CRS-3 triples the capacity of its predecessor, the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System, with up to 322 Terabits per second, which enables the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress to be downloaded in just over one second; every man, woman and child in China to make a video call, simultaneously; and every motion picture ever created to be streamed in less than four minutes." newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2010/prod_030910.htmlI think this is an indication as to where we are headed and the importance of internet connectivity. How it is implemented in our AV gear is another question. I've played with Netflix streaming through the Samsung Blu-ray player. It works, but, it's less than stellar. If the data rates were high enough there's no reason it couldn't be as good as our current Blu-ray discs.

I don't know about that, but, I could see a day where you don't have any physical media sitting on the shelf. Face it, it's already happening. My last trip to Fry's Electronics the CD racks had dwindled to maybe a quarter of what I was previously used to.

Perhaps their agreement with the studios limits PQ.

Vudu is 1080p in HDX. Very close to BD, but no HD audio.

I think the Roku box only goes up to 720p (part of why it's so cheap), and that may only be a hardware limitation. I don't know the resolution of Netflix streamed content. From what I've heard, it's probably not as high as 1080. - LoopinFool

All interesting posts, but, where will we be in a year or two or three? That's where I was going by mentioning the Cisco announcement.

While I agree that it's all going toward digital downloadable music, some of us (..i.e myself) like physical media!

Absolutely. I won't buy MP3s when I can get the full resolution CD along with album art and notes for about the same price or usually less. I know we have the paradigm of walking out of the store with something we can hold in our hands. But,I think in time that is all going to change.
iTunes "Cover Flow" so reminds me of my days going to the record store and flipping through the bins to find the latest vinyl LP of my favorite group. Then getting home and peeling off the shrink wrap and the first playing and reading all the liner notes (which you could actually read) and then looking at the poster that always had creases in it that you could never get out. If you think about it we could still do that, only in a digital way. Imagine having electronic liner notes and interviews with the artists much like we now have on the extras a lot of our DVDs and Blu-rays. And, it could all be kept current as new content comes along much like the BD Live feature that is on some Blu-rays. I think the possibilities are endless. It just depends on bandwidth and the "record companies" putting that kind of info out on the net in a way that it is accessible.
I guess the point is: Things are changing and the internet is where it is going to be.
And, this thread has gotten a little off track, sorry.
