What is the best HD Dishnetwork receiver to get for the UMC-1?

littlesmoniz on here just recently had Dish installed because DirecTV was giving him the run-around with support. I don't know which receiver he got, though, but he sounds happy. Maybe he can chime in.

There were some previous posts about this if you want to do a search . If I recall, the HDMI interface was a little difficult causing the dish receiver to shut down and reboot. I ended up using component video and toslink, and haven't had any problems since with the UMC. I'm using the VIP222 dish receiver (HD, but non DVR), but problems with the VIP722 were also discussed. I haven't tried HDMI since the firmware update (didn't want to tear everything apart and reprogram inputs), so the HDMI handshake might have been addressed already? Hope this helps.

I have the latest UMC-1 firmware and VIP722. I don't seem have have issues with shutdown using HDMI, but using HDMI I lose audio every once in a while and can only be fixed when input is changed and changed back. So I use HDMI for video only and optical for audio - haven't had problems in the last few days.
Oh and turning on the umc-1 and tuning to VIP722 seems to take forever. Usually takes about 10-15sec to power things up before I can start watching it.

Takes forever.. 10-15 seconds. When did 10-15 become forever? My TV takes much longer to come up to brightness. Fast times at ridgemont high!

I too have a problem with DISH last I checked I couldn't even get the picture up. I undid all my amp to the dish and oppo and only use it currently for FM radio. After the firmware next addition I presume it will work fine. Tried to get Dish to cough up a free 722 but no luck. They want to pop me with another 100 dollars. Yet at the same time I get flyers from them every other day telling me what they will give away to new users.

Yeah Dish will give you the world to get you on board, but once they have you it is all over. You can't get a free toothpick after you are a user. I hate this about Dish.

Yet at the same time I get flyers from them every other day telling me what they will give away to new users. You're going about it from the wrong direction. You need to make Dish think you are going to bail on them and switch to U-verse or DirectTV or such, and get their customer Retention people involved. Those are the guys that make the deals to keep you as a paying customer.

Yes, I am well aware of the process. I probably got with the wrong folks rather with the retention folks up the food chain; they've been usually accommodating in the past. Probably just got the wrong person. I definitely want to try the new model receiver that they have. But they've had the 722 for some time now. I suppose pretty soon they will break through with even a more enhanced next generation model. jtmj

Latest model, been raved about for quite a while, but still not in end users hands. www.webtvwire.com/dish-vip-922-dvr-review/I have a vip 722 and don't have any issues hooked up via component and toslink. Never tried HDMI though.

Just read Lonnies info re updated firmware but did not see anything about the dish handshaking issue via hdmi. Did I overlook something or will this too be remedied on the second firmware delivery soon to come? jtmj

Good news, the other day I spoke again with customer retention at DISH and after getting past the first tier I was able to talk with a supervisor who quickly agreed to send me a 722 model and a tech to install everything; all this mostly pro bono. I only had to pay $15.00 for a the tech to come out. So once this is installed I will see if the handshake issue will be resolved once and for all. I would love to hear from other folks who already have the 722; dish has a 922 or some 900 version that will do lots more pretty soon. I believe the techs are in training as to how to work with them. Unfortunately these could go for between 200.00 to 400.00 dollars I hear. Don't want to go that far to get it to work with my system; fingers crossed to the possibly success of the 722 model; it comes tomorrow. jtmj

I have hooked-up the 722 last Saturday to watch a PPV on HD. No issues that I noticed on sound. I did however saw that the UMC-1 was upscaling the 1080i picture to 1080p. It looked great but it seemed to stutter ever so slightly. Not at all bad but when I switched over to 1080i (pass through) it was more fluid to watch. So I stuck with that.
