The Onkyo TX-SR608 THX-Certified A/V Receiver is one of several HDMI v1.4, 3D-Ready A/V Receivers and Home Theater Systems that will ship in March and April. And so it begins. The XMC will have to be HDMI 1.4 because everything else is going there now.

Honestly, I personally can't wait till the 3D spec becomes truely mainstream, but its going to be a few more years at least. Conservative guess is 3-4 years. Early adopters over the next 2.

3D movies are coming in fast succession, all major manufacturers are making 3D HDTVs and BD players now. All new receivers are coming out now with HDMI 1.4. I suspect when Avatar is released on BD, it'll be in 3D...as well as Alice in Wonderland, etc.- I bet it'll be up and running before the end of this year! (You heard it here first, people!)

So? Maybe a handful of movies this year? Less than 5? Maybe double that next year at best? Yep a number of TV's this year will be "3D ready", but before there are actually enough HD software to make the purchase even remotely worthwhile your talking a number of years still. It just isn't going to happen as soon as you think. I actually will add another year onto my conservative estimate of mass market appeal to the 5 year range. Early adoptors will spend the money over the next year or 2 to have only a few titles on hand.............come back to this thread in a few years, see how accurate I was on my prediction. Mfg's have to come up with some new gizmo or feature to keep selling products.........lol........I mean, we have had 7.1 AVR's and processors now for quite a few years........how many Blu rays or DVD are actually encoded 7.1? Not very many at all.

Yes, the Onkyos and Denons of the world will lead the charge because they have trained their customers to replace their AVRs every 12 months. At least it stimulates their economy.

www.film-releases.com/film-release-schedule-3D.phpThat's at least 15 this year alone...not to mention HDTV channels that are broadcasting in 3D now...including this years World Cup. Let's check in with each other at the end of this year and see who wins the Nostradamus award. Alot of those movies listed just need regular cheap anaglyph cardboard glasses(which normally come with the movie) and do not need shutter glasses or TV's that support shutter glasses. And um, who in America really cares about watching "soccer" This is football country baby! When they start broadcasting the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL in 3D on TV supporting LC shutter glasses, then Ill start to seriously consider 3d equipment. Again, Im all 100% for it, just isnt here yet where its worth the premium.

LOL.....the only "trend" I see are manufacturer's trying to shove a gimmicky feature down our throats in a desperate attempt to boost revenue in light of plummeting HDTV prices.

As long as special glasses need to be worn, and they include them in each 3D Bluray, (at extra costs I imagine)I can see a lot of glasses ending up in the trash and maybe not too many people jumping on board. I know I will be happy with 2D until they can make a 3D where special glasses are not necessary. And those blue and red cardboard puppies, you can keep those (& 3D) and let me see the real colors shining through.

There's also a 508 and 308 model on the US Onkyo website.

It ain't easy, but they are fast working on 3D without glasses.... www.engadget.com/2008/01/04/mitsubishi-shows-off-3d-tv-technology-no-glasses-needed/blogs.forbes.com/digitaldownload/2009/01/3d-without-glasses/I myself, prefer 3D contact lenses... but that's just me. Then again...glasses are cool, too: These glasses show in 3DD!

Like I said before I guess no one here wears sunglasses for more then a few minuets so why would anyone expect them to wear 3D glasses for 2 hours ,but I guess I`m in the minority that wear glasses daily- I wear prescription glasses already so putting on 3D glasses are no big deal to me ,I`m very excited about 3D after seeing Avatar it did not look gimmicky to me what so ever , but I will wait till the prices come down before I invest hopefully it will not take to long

I'm betting 99.9999% of the people complaining about wearing the glasses have never even put a pair of shutter glasses on and are simply talking out their asses. The difference between the polarized glass you get at the movie theater and actual shutter glasses is a very big difference. The shutter glasses make a amazing 3d image and it's a much better effect than the polarized ones at the theater. I own the Nvidia 3d vision and wear the shutter glasses and they are very comfortable and within 2 minutes you forget they are even on. Pepole seem to forget that with software you can make anything 3d. I play alot of 3d games on my pc that are 5 years old and look great in 3d. I'd imagine that in a few years the players will have this built in and every movie will have the option to be watched in 3D.

Market forces and technology will eventually drive down the 3D stuff into our living rooms and theaters I'm sure. I also won't rule out some other innov *-)ations in the 3D rendering technology (i.e. different technologies than having to wear glasses, alternatives to polarized glasses or shutter glasses, etc.). We all love this changing technological landscape, although sometimes it seems to move wayy too fast for us!..

That new 608 is surely very appetizing.
* But here's my beef with all the receivers (and pre/pros too) of the world, or 99.9999999999999% of them: ---> HDMI (1.3 or 1.4, don't matter) is SIGNIFICANTLY inferior to SPDIF, UNLESS, HDMI signal is handled with very sophisticated jitter-reduction circuits.
Now I did it, I just said my Peace.

I disagree that it will be a short lived gimmick. The technology is finally in place to make it work.
Now I'm not sure I want to watch everything in 3D - I don't even want to see Larry King in HD, let alone 3D. Movies will be great. 3D porn could be disturbing .........

3D porn could be disturbing ......... Well, it might be disturbing, but it also might be as close to the real thing as some of us ever get!
