Has the UMC-1 or the future XMC-1 a night mode? I think about a mode like Audyssey Dynamic Volume which reduce the dynamic and the large variation in volume level for example a evening or a night listening? I think this is not a functionality of the Dolby Volume or is it? Thanks a lot.

Good articles to get a handled on what Dolby Volume can do for you. There seems to be some confusion about this feature of the UMC-1.

to me, dolbyvolume sounds terrible on the UMC-1. I can't imagine i'd be using its current implementation under any circumstances.

I've been using DRC/night mode for years, and I was completely excited at the announcement that Dolby Volume was applicable to all codecs, unlike DRC which only works on Dolby Digital sources that supported the parameter. I know that Dolby Volume is doing what it's supposed to, but the boost to the highs and lows are far too excessive and makes me react in the same manner as fingernails on a chalkboard. Fortunately my only purpose for using Dolby Volume is for night watching, so I've been able to get around the "scratchy", muffled, and boomy sound of it by configuring a Manual EQ to compensate for the excessive boost. So now I just activate the relative Manual EQ setting when enabling Dolby Volume, and after a power cycle the Manual EQ settings that my inputs are assigned to are restored.

the dmc1 and mmc1 had 3 dynamic ranges... seemed to be a nice feature

I've tried it several times and I just really don't care for what it does to the sound. It could be a nice feature since some tracks are so dynamic that you have to keep turning the sound up and down, so you try the dolbyvolume at one setting then another, then you get tired of the blooty compressed sound and turn it off. It's like, wow that sounds much better, and you leave it off!

That's kind of sad, as I tought it was a great feature that works quite well (Dolby Volume).

The Yamaha Adaptive DRC/DSP functions aren't much better. I've tried them out, didn't like what they did to the sound, and left them turned off ever since.

Personally I preferred those (used to have an RX-V1800) over Dolby Volume for night watching. It didn't boost the EQ the way Dolby Volume does - just plain and simple DRC, but the nice thing is it's applicable to all codecs.

Thanks a lot for your responses.
I understand that Dolby Volume will help in two thinks: - volume leveler : keep a constant volume, no big variation in switching external sources (DVD, TV …) or for the same source like channels in TV - volume modeler : maintain all nuances and impact of the original audio regardless of the selected playback volume. For example, by lower volume, the dynamic range is adjusted so that the speech remains clear and music passages retain their impact
I think will the Dolby Volume will be a great function for me.
What are the Dolby Volume parameters which can be modified or is it only an on/off function on the UMC-1?

What are the Dolby Volume parameters which can be modified or is it only an on/off function on the UMC-1? The Dolby Volume settings are: Off, Low, Med, High The Low, Med, High refer to different degrees of volume leveling. I run mine on Med for TV viewing and love it. No more annoyingly loud commercials.
