Hey all,
So, I picked up a new set of speakers for a 2-channel setup, but don't have the requisite USP/amp goodies to power it yet. I pulled out an old AVR (Yamaha RX-V800 is the model number, I think) to at least give them some juice temporarily.
However, the AVR keeps shutting off. I've never seen it go into protect mode, so perhaps it's doing that.
The odd thing is, it does it with NOTHING plugged into it. A lot of times, it could be a loose wire, bad connection, or bad cable. However, no cable is the issue, as I've tried with none plugged in.
I almost unscrewed the shell to open 'er up, but then I realized I'm an idiot and have no idea what I'm doing (I do the same thing with my car hood).
The power cable is the only thing I can think of, but it's not removable. Multiple different outlets and circuits haven't helped.
Did this last move finally kill this sucker? Any thoughts?

Try a reset. Do you still have the receiver's instruction manual? It should be indicated near the end.

Then your second option is to verify the internal fuses. * Yup, you'll have to remove the top cover (receiver unplugged duh), and you will see some fuses near the back probably. Look at them, and if you don't notice anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, simply remove them. Then (you probably don't have an electronic tester, do you, I tought so too) bring them to your nearest electronics store to check them out for you, that's all. -> I'll be back later with option #3, just in case #1 & #2 did not solve the issue.

So, did you get it going yet? ... Cause I'm ready with option #3.

lol...was just coming to reply to this thread specifically.
Tried both, minus the "taking it to an electronics store" part. Fuse looks good. There was no reset button, and I checked the manual...nothing detailed in there. :/

All right, here's your problem, I think. Now, follow these procedures to the letter: * Before you proceed here, don't plug the receiver just yet (AC power cord). 1. Connect your loudspeakers correctly to the binding posts of that Yammy receiver. 2. Connect one source (CD player, DVD player, whatever). 3. Select the right speakers (A or B) * This is important. 4. In the rear of your receiver there is an impedance switch, slide it fully to the RIGHT (8-Ohm position). 5. Now plug the AC power cord to the wall outlet. 6. Wait 10 seconds. 7. Set the Receiver in Standby mode. 8. Disconnect the power cord. 9. Wait 30 seconds. 10. Plug it back on. Good to go. --> In the eventuality that my procedure would not bring full success, I got the ultimate solution for the next step, and I guaranty you that I will make your Yamaha receiver operating perfectly right. But please, don't make me wait too long, because I might simply forget about you by being too concentrated on other matters of extreme importance, do you understand? Say, by 6:00 PM tomorrow (that should give you plenty of time). Cheers, Bob

This didn't work either. Considering it's the exact same thing I did to hook it up the first time, and I've changed nothing since, I wasn't expecting much.
I appreciate your help, Bob.

What is your personal diagnostic (best guess) though? Tell me a bit more on the exact behavior of your RX-V800 (is this the right model?)? Check in the instruction manual starting on page 70 ("Troubleshooting"). * Here's something you might try: take a small file, and file a bit the two teeth at the end of the AC cord from your Yammy receiver. I doubt it change anything, but you got nothing to loose at this point. *** Also, here's an important fact: if you have several power surges in the area where you live, it will shorten the life of your components, and eventually make them inoperative; it's just a normal behavior as it affects several power related sections in your electronic components (also laser transports from CD, DVD, BD players). Now, you got two choices: 1. Or you tell me a bit more about the exact model # of your Yamaha receiver with the exact bad behavior it's doing, or... 2. You simply give up, wait for your USP/amp to arrive, and meanwhile get a cheap stereo integrated amp or receiver from a place like Audiogon ($100 will get you there). Cheers, Bob P.S. I'll give you a full year to answer this one. ...No rush.

lol...Thanks again for your help. To answer your questions: It is the RX-V800. My best guess is that something is sending it into protect mode, though there's no indication that would make me think that. It just shuts off. I have a tough time anticipating what would cause protect, as there is literally nothing plugged into it and it still does it. Worth noting, it's getting worse. It used to take about 10 seconds to kick off. Now it does it almost instantly. No power surges to speak of, but it is 10 years old. Maybe this poor sucker is just pooped out. This isn't the end of the world. I can run Zone 2 off my HT setup and that will get me by. This Yammy has been a war horse for me for a long time. I guess sitting in a box for the last 18 months has allowed it a slow, quiet death.

I got receivers much much older than your RX-V800, and they still work like brand new. But then, I'm quite unique with my stuff. Anywoo, did you make sure the impedance switch is fully slide to one side (preferably the right side)? What you can also do is this: call an audio repair shop, tell them you have a receiver that's going boing-boing, and you would like to have a free estimate as to the problem. They don't have free estimate, no problem, call another audio shop till you find one that do a free estimate (don't give up, there are some). Hey, the 800 (even if it's a bit old) is still a great unit. And it could be just the replacement of a small and cheap part to get it going again. That's about the best I could do from an audio forum (the Lounge) on the internet. Goood loook, Bob ~ Chicago Blues, right on! ...Illinois, The Blues Brothers, next town passed the border (I'm from Joliette, Montreal suburb).

I will check that out...if I can get it done cheap, I definitely will. Hooked up my Zone 2 on my Onkyo 876 last night and I don't think the left channel works. *hangs head in shame*
lol...cheers!

But there is still a solution for these extreme cases; recycling.
* How? Ask me next time.

Sounds like an internal short. Some AVRs have control panel failures and causes them to go into protection for instance.
