This has been happening for at least 6 months or so. Direct TV DVR hooked up to my RV-2500. The other TV's don't seem to be effected as they are direct to the TV. The Audio Drop happens I look at my receiver and it says (something..Something) -4db's. I should remember what the something something is since I have seen it so many times but its 5:50am

It's just the "Dialnorm" showing up and that your Yamaha RX-V2500 is adjusting to. Perfectly normal, don't fret it. * When you play a disc (BD in general), with each movie preview (right at the very beginning), the dialog normalization will quickly display in the front panel display of your Yammy, and your 2500 has to sync (harmonize) to it. And it will also happen at the beginning of the main feature film. For more on Dialog Normalization, simply Google it. Or check here: @ www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_2/feature-article-dialog-normalization-6-2000.html

Throwing HDMI into the fires of Mordor? Perhaps. However an alternate solution would be to correctly standardize HDMI....... Never mind, passage to the fires of Mordor granted..... No worries, we're at the door of Wireless now.

I heard Emotiva (mostly just Dan & Lonnie) secretly released the UMC-1 to spread an audio-dropout virus to the HDMI world. Clearly it has finally propagated to previously stable platforms and will likely continue until no one's audio sync is safe. Power conditioners, though they will not exhibit symptoms, are also carriers of the virus. As are high-end speaker cables, certain household lamps, and engine oil.

I think I saw that same message on mine but like you - all I can recall for sure was "-4 dB". I will have to watch it closely to see what it says. The only reason I noticed it was that I heard the dropout and glanced at my AVR and saw something just before audio came back and the message went away.

Thanks Bob - didn't notice that. I gave the link a quick read, and that may very well be it. But, in reading it (and maybe I missed some finer points), it seems like the Dialnorm would kick in at transitions between commercials and main programming or on other transitions.
The issue I have is not at transitions...it's in steady state, mid-program. So, I am watching the program, a person is talking, and "blip" - no audio and "blip" - audio is back. The total time from audio to none to audio again is very short...like, maybe a second or less, but enough to notice.
Did I miss something in the article? And, in any case - is there anything that can be done to eliminate the issue?

Hey Mark, from which source do you get this? Digital cable box? Digital Satellite TV?

satellite TV only. Also, audio and video are going via HDMI from satellite receiver (a DVR specifically) to an AVR (Denon 3806) in one application and from satellite receiver to a TV in 2 other setups (1 Sony TV, 1 Toshiba with neither receiver being a DVR in these 2 setups). And, this is happening in all 3 setups (3 different rooms). (I've not yet tried to see if the cutouts happen at the same time in each room, and that would be tough as they are quite a distance apart! 1 on 3rd floor, 1 on 2nd, and 1 on 1st!)
I am not getting this from any other sources in any of the rooms...which include various DVD players, a BluRay player, and a Wii.

Well here you go, welcome to Satellite TV with all the commercials and you name it. It is perfectly normal my friend. * Your Denon AVR-3806 receiver is acting very normal by showing you the dialnorm that constantly switch in & every time between various commercials and programs. And because it is also from a satellite, you do indeed lose (for a very quick delay) a fast gap in the audio. It all has to do with the sync from your Denon receiver, the type of connection used, and the program's source. Makes sense to you? Would you like me to explain to you exactly what is the cause of this? Or is that good enough for you to not lose any sleep over it?

I did just watch it closely for a while, and I do see that if I switch channels - it does say "dial norm -4dB" on my Denon. So, that's the "something something" reported above.
Of course, now that I am watching it closely - I have not yet been able to get it to repeat the "steady state" disruption (meaning - not while switching channels or it switching from a program to a commercial). But, I am sure if I watch enough - I will see that. It did it once ever 10-15 minutes during a program last night (Discovery Channel HD "Life"). (And, we had overcast skies here at that point...maybe I was getting slight signal losses as a result...hmmm? If so, the brief audio cutout is better than the "searching for signal" and total loss of audio and video I got with my older satellite tuners!)
I think I get what you are saying...basically, even in steady state - if there's a momentary gap in the signal such as a delay in the signal transmission, it could do the same thing (ie, move out of steady state into a transient mode which triggers the dial norm).
While I'd prefer that didn't happen, I get it. But, I am still going to blame Lonnie and Emotiva. This never happened until the UMC-1 launch, so I think Lonnie secretly programmed in extra disruptions into all satellite TV systems. He's got an evil plan somewhere in this...rest assured! (kidding, really...!!!)
Thanks for the explanation, Bob!

Oh, I did not know that your UMC-1 was in the loop! Then, it is simply a chip program function which is not muting quick enough the transition between flipping channels. If you did not encounter this issue previously with another pre/pro, then it is inherent of the UMC-1 programmation. Ha! ...Or am I missing something here?

Sorry for confusion ....this is not w UMC....just jumping on the "blame EMO" bandwagon in a joking attempt.
This is w my denon and alsdo non-avr setups.
It just goes to show as the OP noted that a lot of the issues reported can be unrelated to the prepro.

These audio drop outs with satellite receivers have been a problem for many, many months and are experienced whether you are using HDMI or Component Video/Digital audio. DirecTV tech support has admitted this issue is their fault and that they "hope" to fix it with a future software release.
When I did my last HD receiver upgrade from DirecTV, the company that came to do the installment did a lot of installations for both Dish and DTV and I picked the technician mind while he was hear. He said that Dish was plagued with this behavior and it was much worse if connected via HDMI. He said that his company always try to convince the customer of Dish receivers to connect with Component Video/digital audio -- far fewer problems.
Talking to friends, the cable company servicing this area is far worse than the satellite receivers. Lonnie must have uploaded that virus to all the communications satellites when they first started designing the UMC-1. ;D ;D There is a man who really plans ahead. LOL

The funny thing about the dropouts I have had is that either I was not having them or didn't notice until recently. I am wondering if all the talk of dropouts on the UMC got me paying attention/noticing.
Honestly, when I watch TV, I often am not concentrating enough to notice what is going on with the sound (shows how much I value TV progamming!). Were dropouts to occur while I was watching a concert DVD or movie (which I almost exclusively watch via DVD/BluRay) - I know I would notice.

Do I have an issue? No, but now you asked, wchich one? ;D ...I just tought you should know...
