thanks forum members for your timely responses. they have been useful and informative.
now i would like to narrow down my question.
assume that all bugs are resolved, fw installed and the umc does not change settings when fast forwarding satellite/cable program or other as-sundry irritations........
assume that all set-up and fine tuning has been completed............
assume a high quality universal remote.......................
will the umc be as convenient, more convenient or less convenient to operate than your average avr? we have only 4 uses. 1. direct tv (hdmi) latest version of hd-dvr from direct tv 2. bluray (hdmi) oppo bdp83 3. cd (rca) emotiva 4. xbox (hdmi) xbox 360
all except cd will be displayed on a samsung 46 inch lcd w/1080p capabilities. bought new last march. cant remember #.
i for one have the confidence that emo will solve the necessary problems with the umc considering their past history. so...........my question begins from a little bit of faith. for those who have less faith, i have read and heard your concerns so you need not articulate them for me again. i am not trying to minimize or denigrate your concerns, i am merely trying to focus the responses.
in advance thanks..............
tchaik..........................

Given all your assumptions.....there should be no difference.
Even with all the complaints you read here, mine is doing most everything I could expect of it without any undue drama. My wife loves it. It's a joy to use.
By the way....I'm WAY too old to be anyone's fan-boy.....just stating MY experience with the UMC.

I think if all the bugs regarding operation and setup are corrected the UMC-1 will be an excellent prepro functionally and SQ wise . If not then the UMC-1 can be a challenge to use day to day unless you are willing to take the time to do some tweaking. Time will tell when the new FW becomes available . Bill

I think it is a fantastic processor once they get the kinks worked out.The Manual Sub and speaker EQ system is worth the price of the unit.I have had very little problems except for the Manual EQ system as I do not use any automatic EQ and room correction in any processor I have had in my system.I use the UMC-1 with my USP-1 and had no problems in Bypass mode.I also use it with my Oppo BDP-83 BluRay player and no problems using all its featureswith HDMI.

tchaik, I have some of the same concerns as you... and you know what? Why stress about it? You have 30 days where you can try it in your setup and return if its not easy enough for your family. Thats the easiest method (unless you are overseas or something)

I would say it takes a little more time/knowledge to properly set up the UMC compared to a typical AVR. Once everything is set, the operation is just as simple as the Pioneer AVR I replaced.

good point mysterymachine.......
but i just dont return things. once equipment is installed, there it stays for a long time unless it actually needs repair. if i buy it i will keep it. i know it sounds strange but i wont even take back small items to the dept store or walmart. drives my wife nuts since she is just the opposite.
so if/when i buy the umc it will stay in my system until the next upgrade. that is why i voice my questions.
tchaik.......................................
and thanks oppmann99 for your input. i am not afraid of a labor intensive set-up. my familys needs are my concern.

Any complicated system has its quirks, it is your job to make a remote work for the entire family.
You are not talking about a complicated system however and assuming we will all be bug free soon, it should be as simple to operate as an AVR.
I am not sure what remote you are considering but I highly recommend the Harmony units. It makes the spouse and children confident they can work it because it has a button that say's help on it. Each of my systems has a Harmony that everyone else uses... I prefer a Pronto when I am using them however as I tend to tweak.
I tried to teach my wife to use the Pronto but if anything went wrong, she was stuck and no amount of master programming was going to help.

Yes I am having the REMOTE problem between the UMC-1 and the USP-1.I just contacted EMO and they have the new remotes and have to upgrade a cd disc for the codes and then all will be fixed.I will get my remote and disc in a few weeks so I hope to have both upgrades together for the UMC-1.

I would gather that no matter what the UMC should be easier to operate than an AVR. For everyday usage what more do you do than turn it on/off, switch inputs, and occasionally adjust the volume? Once the initial setup is done to your satisfaction, there's not much to do. Perhaps you might occasionally quick adjust a trim level, but that's about it.
With AVRs on the other hand, I'm almost constantly using the remote - pause, play, menu items (e.g. select programs, record), ff, rw, etc.
Edit: Oops. After rereading this you said "AVR", not "DVR". I don't know what I was thinking. Disregard my nonsensical post above.

We have Recently Recieved the UMC-1 about two weeks ago and are enjoying it quite well.
I end up working a lot of nights, leaving my wife at home to play with all the gadgets.
We have the Following Hooked up:
XBox 360 PS3 Direct TV Roku Player (NetFilx) WD Media Player Pioner Laser Disc Player
Have Tried out the ERC-1, haven't gotten around to the OPPO-BD83 Player yet.
She has only called me once, I had Changed the TV output to Aux 8 Optical, and had not marked it yet.
I asked her about it tonight, and she said it was quite easy to use, No problems switching from different devices, TV, Roku, and PS3 ect... She Really likes the how you can Personalize each output to read what they are. Also, you can skip the unused channels by selecting them invisible, less to skip thru.
I highly recommend it for ease of use after you set it up.

Hi jafo,
Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your feedback. I concur that my UMC is easy to use. However I did spend a bit of time figuring out the input setup in my universal remote. The manual needs to be clear that the inputs are in the order specified in the manual and although they can be reassigned (e.g. CABLE could be reassigned to Roku) one still needs to map the CABLE discrete code. May be obvious to some but I am thick!
We look forward to hearing more from your experience with the Oppo.
