utdriven, I would agree with you that if he is unhappy with his speakers upgrade those first. If you dont like the sound of your speakers no matter what source you have you wont enjoy it.

Ben, I dont know about the arm but the Debut has a Ortofon OM5E, the US 1.3 has a Sumiko Pearl mounted. Whats the differences that you found. PS not trying to defend just curious about the discussion. Ah, well, I didn't realize that there was a Perl on there. I was looking at the ProJect website, not the Sumiko website (Sumiko is the US importer for ProJect). That must account for at least part of the cost difference in the US. I have a lot of experience with the Ortofon cartridge (I was listening to it yesterday), but none with the Pearl, so I don't know how they compare. I've never actually seen this table in person or listened to it, so take my impressions with a grain of salt.

The Music Hall turntables use allot of elements from project such as the tone arm etc. So Project and Music Hall turntables would be very similar.
I haven't heard the Rega tables in a long time, but I did like a friend P7. Nice table. ;D

Well I made my decision! .........on speakers I purchased the Aperion 633-T's that twochannelman was selling on the emporium I think I will be extremely happy with them, so for now I'll be holding off on the TT As i said before, I really appreciate everyone's input, and I will likely revive this thread around the end of september (near my B-day) when I will likely be buying my first TT! in the meantime, feel free to hijack this thread to continue this very interesting discussion

In the meantime, I'll take your word for it... * All right, now that you have the time to save huge amount of $$$ for your next (first) Turntable purchase, and that you can contemplate several other projects and options, you might want to give a look at this one (it might indeed fit your future budget): -> blog.ultimateavmag.com/ultimate-gear/purevox_pv-flagship_turntable/... Meanwhile, I'll do some more research for you Tristan...

I would get the Rega P1 modified by LP Gear. Essentially getting an upgrade to an Ortofon OM 10 for free. Or look at it this way; the Project Debut III in black with an Ortofon OM 10 stylus upgrade would be about the same price.

haha! yeah, you know spending 2/3 the cost of my HOUSE on a TT sounds fabulous!! I really do wonder if a $100,000 TT is really 100 times better than a $1000 TT.........I find it hard to believe. I do know that good components really are amazing (the first time I listened to Magnepan setup with a Sota TT it literally changed my outlook on audio systems), but at a certain point it becomes more an issue of "look what I can buy" keep up the research Lordoftherings!!!

I wanted to buy a TT - looked, compared, read reviews for two months before I pulled the trigger. I bought the MMF7.1 with the Goldring cartridge pre-installed. I haven't dealt with TTs in years, but after looking at what's available, that one seemed to fit a lot of what makes a TT seem to sound good (separated motor, acrylic platter, reliable tonearm), and what I was looking for as a consumer (came with dust cover, cartridge, and good looks). Granted, the 7.1 is out of the price range you're looking for, but I have not been disappointed one bit. I love the sound from the vinyl I've amassed so far... can't wait to add an XSP-1 to my system to let that analog sound shine through...

just got back into vinyl. After extensive internet research on exactly those 3 tables, I purchased a Pro-Ject Debut III in gloss black. At the same time, I upgraded to the "acryl-it" platter, which does not ring like the standard metal platter, plus a slightly better record mat. I am very pleased with the sound - very detailed and engaging. From my research, the Rega P1 was reputed to have a lower build quality than the other two. Comparing the Music Hall MF 2.2 vs the Pro-ject Debut III (which are made in the same factory), there didn't seem to be enough difference to pay the extra $70 for the Music Hall (they are so similar, the exact same Acryl-it platter is listed as an upgrade for both tables). Plus, I can later upgrade the stylus on the Ortofon OM-5E to an OM-10, 20, 30, or 40 (supposedly, the $139 OM-20 stylus is the "sweet spot").

If anyone is still interested, what I understand is that the Music Hall MMF 2.2 is the same turntable as the Pro-Ject Xpression III without the acrylic platter and the carbon fiber tone-arm. This should help with explaining: www.avguide.com/review/tested-affordable-turntables-music-hall-pro-ject-rega-nottinghamPaired with the Grado Black cartridge and Sim Audio Moon LP 3 phono preamp, the Xpression III is warm and mellow, not offending, very "analog" sounding. From what I've read, this turntable is capable of bringing the best out of much better cartridges, though I haven't tried. I'll look into upgrading when my Grado dies.

thanks for the info crusty! at this point I'm leaning more toward the Music Hall, and from your description it sounds like it has the warmth and laid back sound that I like.
My dilemma right now though is whether or not I should buy used rather than new. Agon and eBay have prices on higher model TT's (Rega planar 3, music hall MMF 5.1) in the $500-$700 price range, so I'm not sure if I want to shell out slightly more money and get a higher model TT or not........
decisions.....decisions....

tristanO, I was actually referring to the Pro-Ject Xpression III in my description. Sorry for the confusion. I think the Xpression runs for $699 new now. Although, if you are looking at used, the Rega P3 is a very popular TT, though I've never heard one. I did hear the MMF 5 a long time ago paired with JM Lab Chorus speakers. It had a musical, yet compelling sound to it. I forget the amp and phono it was connected to, so can't give you a better reference as to the sound of the rest of the components. I haven't heard the 5.1. Good luck! crusty

For anyone getting started, I highly recommend going to your closest dealer, and purchasing an entry-level table, like the ones in the $350-$450 range listed at the start of this thread. Even better, buy a good used table. Vinyl is different from CD's, and while some of us love it, some people simply can't stand the surface noise or the extra effort involved. These entry-level tables are very good, and jumping right into a mid-range table may not be worth the expense when you're just starting out. If you find yourself neglecting your CD collection later, you can always upgrade then.

sorry Crusty, I didn't catch that you were talking about the Pro-ject TT. Ben, that's my current dilemma. because for just slightly more money than a new entry level table I can get a used table thats a step up in quality. I certainly won't be buying one of the higher quality tables new, I'm just not willing to invest that much right now. and BTW I actually don't have a CD collection right now I'm all digital, but i got hooked on vinyl when my dad bought a new Denon TT last christmas to listen to all their old albums. When I was back home I spent a fair amount of time listening to their old stuff and loved it! plus I like the fact that I can get used records for less than 5 bucks, that is just awesome!

I actually just got the Pro-ject RPM 1.3, I can't give a true review on it because it is my first table but can say I have really enjoyed it thus far. Harri009, are you still enjoying your turntable? I ordered the same one but haven't received it yet and was wondering if you feel like you made a good decision.
