I just tried to run the YPAO for the first time since hooking up the UPA-5 to my RX-V665. When I run it and it gets to the "whoop, whoop, whoop" stage the L front sounds off fine, but the rest were crackling really loud and I get a W-1 error(out of phase). I checked all my wiring and everything is right on. I tried it again and again the L front produces the "whoop, whoop, whoop" just fine, but now the others send out a very loud(and I mean loud) BLIP sound. With the speakers hooked into the receiver YPAO works fine. Just not with the amp hooked up. I hope this hasn't hurt my speakers. Movies, TV, and music sound fine. No weird issues there. Any ideas?

Hmmm, wish I had something for you. That's really odd.
I will say this, I added an XPA-3 to my RX-V665 about six weeks ago. I have ran YPAO a couple times now and everything was fine and has been working flawless ever since.
I assume you are using RCA-style audio cables. Have you checked to make sure the bal/un-bal switches are in their correct 'un-bal' position?
Let us know what you come up with.
**EDIT**
I just re-read your post and see you have a UPA-5, which doesn't offer balanced inputs, so scratch my suggestion. I thought you had an XPA-5. Stumped, man. Good luck.

My 665 never seemed to like the YPAO. I just used a db meter to set the levels. Works just fine.

I'm using a 665 as prepro with XPA-5 and have had no problems either. Is your 665 brand new? Have you had any problems other than YPAO - does it work fine running all channels for music/HT? Have you tried disconnecting all other things you have hooked up other than the AVR/amp/speakers?

Interesting. My combo of 663 and UPA-7 worked just fine. First time I've ever heard of anyone with such a problem.
Without running the YPAO and turning off the EQ in the receiver; how does it sound when playing music?
On a separate thought: I found that the UPA-7 was perfectly neutral in character and the YPAO equalization settings didn't change nearly at all before & after adding the UPA-7. The only thing that did change was how loud I would need to turn the volume setting to achieve the same listening volume. As such, if you're able to run YPAO with the speakers hooked up directly into the receiver, then those settings should be good to go even after you hook up the UPA-5.

Have you tried disconnecting all other things you have hooked up other than the AVR/amp/speakers? Everything else with the receiver works great. Yes. I bought it new. I've only had it since Dec. I'm guessing there is an issue with the YPAO chip at the pre-out stage of the receiver. I have an email into Yamaha. I guess, if anything, I'll just send it in for repair. I sure wish I hadn't thrown the box out. I'm going to run into Radio Shack and pick up an SPL meter today so at least I can get the system calibrated.

With the speakers hooked into the receiver YPAO works fine. Just not with the amp hooked up. Movies, TV, and music sound fine. If I were you, I'd disconnect the UPA-5 and connect the speakers straight into the receiver, run YPAO, manually check that everything is OK (such as speaker sizes, etc.), then reconnect the UPA-5, hook the speakers to the UPA-5 and just leave it at that if you're happy with how it sounds.

Well I think I'll skip YPAO altogether and get an SPL meter. I called my local Radio Shack and they have one in stock.

OK. So I have a new rack coming, so today I decided to take everything out the old TV stand. I figured this was a good time to do some more tests with the YPAO. I plugged the speakers back into the receiver and nothing else... YPAO ran fine. So next I hooked the amp back in... again, YPAO ran fine. So I systematically started hooking components back into the system. So far all is well. Go figure.

You need the EMO boxes for repair or future sales, safeguard when you move, resell and I have always been mystified by anyone that discards them.

Tend to agree with browe. I'm using a RX-V659 with a UPA5. Even before I only used YPAO as a starting point then manually adjusted. One feature that I really like about the Yammys is the Enhancement feature for compressed music. Most people will never use it, but it's a must if your using a streaming device (Roku Soundbridge). I've A/B CDs with it off and you can really tell the dif but with it on its tough.

I have the Emotiva box stored in the rafters of my garage, it was the receiver box I was referring to. I looked on Yamaha's site to make sure there was an authorized repair center here in town, and then called them to make sure they were still an authorized repair center before I chucked it. Momma didn't raise no fool. ;D Tend to agree with browe. I'm using a RX-V659 with a UPA5. Even before I only used YPAO as a starting point then manually adjusted. I've A/B CDs with it off and you can really tell the dif but with it on its tough. Well you know, I'm guessing I just had something hooked up wrong because, well here's a little story: When I first got the SACD player a few weeks back I did not have the amp yet. I hooked it up multi channel analog. When I played an SACD, it played out of all 5 speakers(I don't have a sub for the .1). When I played a standard CD it played out of the fronts in 2 channel like it should. After hooking up the amp the first time, when I played an SACD it would play out of the 5 speakers, but now a standard CD would play out the fronts and rears, but not the center. I though it was some sort of anomaly and ignored it for the most part until I tried to run the YPAO and had the issues. Now that I have completely unhooked and rehooked everything back up... No more problems. YPAO works fine, SACD player plays like it should (5ch/2ch). But anyway. All is well in the home front and the music is sweet. Now if I would just get the wonderful email that my Axiom M60 v2s are ready to ship I would be a happy camper. ;D

I keep all of my Emotiva boxes, but I did not keep the boxes for my Velodyne 1500r's or my Thiel 3.6's. Those Thiel boxes were crates...there was lumber in there. I just didn't have a place to keep them.
