I don't want to sort through all the posts on the UMC-1 and try and figure out whether this piece is ready for prime time.
Bottom line is this for me: Can I order it and expect it to work in a very simple HT? I watch Blu-Rays and have an X-Box for some gaming. No cable or satellite involved. I'm not interested in updating anything every two weeks.
Is this the piece for me or not?

Im running mine in a setup like yours , bd, xbox360 and a erc1 for music, and i have to say as long as you thrust emo to sort out the emoQ , and the resetting of the speaker levels(i do) , im having no trouble what so ever with mine , no hangups , no audio loss ,no nothing. The osd pops up ever so often but thats how its designed so i cant hold that against them either . Count me as at least one happy umc owner ;D

emokid - I'd not hear the bit about the osd popping up every so often. Can you elaborate? Does it do this at random - right in the middle of showing a video, or only in certain situations like switching sources or something?
Thanks,
Mark

You may or may not have issues if you purchase one right now...

Thanks, Mark The OSD pops up when audio codecs change, can be during commercials, switching inputs, or just losing HDMI lock. However, there is a user preference that can be changed to turn off the OSD popup, so it should not really be an issue.

I would definitely wait to make a decision once the pending, looming, coming in two weeks firmware is released. Then wait another couple of weeks to let the beta testers see if its solid.

you can turn it of but then you turn off all osd i think No. You just turn off the codec popups. If you change volume, it still works as expected. Original poster: No. Wait for the 3rd gen firmware which should be released soon.

I think if you are not on the preorder list - ordering one now will surely take a while to be shipped - plenty of time I would think to have another release of the FW or 3

I have a simple set up as well .. an HDTV, XBox, universal blu ray player from Oppo. I have an XPA-5 and UMC-1 from Emotiva.
I have no problems with the XBox running through UMC-1 with HDMI. I am also using HDMI from the Oppo to the UMC-1 to play Blue Ray, standard DVD, and CD.
If you are running Blu Ray at 24hz, there is a momentary (couple seconds at most) loss of picture and sound as UMC-1 switches from 60hz ato 24hz. Not a deal breaker for me, but this issue is supposedly being addressed by the upcoming firmware update.
The picture quality either through the UMC-1 or through the Oppo via "pass through" is extremely good. Blu Ray and DVD look great. The sound quality of the UMC-1 is extraordinary. The soundstage is wide. Instruments/voices have their own place in space with a full and complete timbre. The sound is natural and smooth.
I was able to tweak my speaker/sub settings even without Emo-Q to adjust the sound to my room which has been both easy and helpful.

tjb,
My two channel set up was a Carver 4.0t and a Carver CT-7 preamp. For home theatre, I had an aging Yamaha 620 with no pre-outs or HDMI nor a high def tv.
Now, I feel like I am in hog heaven. The upgrade, especially for the price, is quite substantial.

The UMC-1 really had no business being released as it is right now. It's currently a late stage beta product.
The question is simply 'do you trust that Emo will get these issues sorted out' and 'do you have the patience to deal with the issues in the mean time'.
While it's easy to say yes you can trust Emo will make things right... almost every time I've heard a new issue brought up on this forum the initial reaction of Emo has been 'that is normal/by design' or 'that's a 3rd party's fault'. So at this point I'm still unsure what issues I can expect to be fixed and what issues I can expect to be told are normal/not the UMC's fault and have to just live with.
Basically I'm just waiting to see how everything acts once the new firmware is released.

How do one get the FW? That's what I thought. It's ok to buy it now. Will the price be going up shortly?

There has been no definitive answer on this subject that I know of so a call to Emotiva might get you some answers to ease your mind.

I think he's saying that the latest FW update...almost 2 months old and which doesn't sort out the problems, is still available for download. Therefore its a good time to buy a UMC... Anyway...thats how I took his response. I may be wrong...

Whachoo talkin' bout? It would be a real drag if I didn't have mine. There are plenty of us that don't feel the same. I for one am very happy I sold mine and found a different solution. Will I try again when they get the bugs worked out? Maybe... only time and more testing will tell. Might just wait for the next generation at this point.
