my ultra-12 arrived today! it wasn't packaged quite as fancy as the ERM-s (no black cloth bags) & i agree with others that the ERM finish looks more refined. however, for an ultra series speaker, i think it looks just fine & the overall quality/finish was consistent with what i've seen in other emo products. i'm 're-modeling' my living area system, so nothing is quite placed right, but my initial listening tests after a couple hours of break in were quite encouraging. bass was pretty smooth and tight. nothing that i noticed to be wrong or undesirable. i'm not as much of a bass connoisseur as some on this forum, but i can tell you that i hate boomy/muddy base, and that is not what i was hearing. so far it sounds like a winner to me!

It does look pretty good in that photo. A bit better than the pics on the site. I can't wait to hear the reviews on these.

I saw the units at Axpona. They look a lot better in practice than in the photos. Damn, now I'm thinking a Sub 12 would fit in just right in my room.. I have a corner for it!

i'll post some more photos soon. i will mention that i don't have an answer regarding 220v operation. the back panel looks the same as on the emo site - only mentioning 110v & didn't see anything in the manual. i have lots of 220v outlets in my shop, but not quite feeling brave enough to plug it in there... i'm also starting to formulate a few more thoughts on the sound but will take a few days for me to do some experiments before i speak. stay tuned!

I am waiting to hear something from elwicksto on his sub. I guess he did say it would take him a few days before he would post anything.

The subs are not dual voltage, only single voltage. Either 110 or 230, not both.

The subs are not dual voltage, only single voltage. Either 110 or 230, not both. Yes, Big Dan made reference to that on the Emocast yesterday. It wasn't clear why the Ultra subs would not be dual voltage, but Dan did say that "as of now" there will be different sku for 120V and 230V subs. He mentioned that these are the only Emotiva product that doesn't come ready for dual voltage use. I am curious if this was a sourcing issue; and I also wonder if the Ultra subs will eventually become dual voltage units.

Sorry for the delay - folks! My environment still isn't in it's final form (I built my new cabinet, but there is still staining to do...) so I've been a bit reluctant to post audio impressions on an untuned system with speakers in the wrong places.. The other reason for the delay was I was starting to form an impression that I was hearing some undesirable rumble sounds. My u-12 in the corner of a ~25x25 room with vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors that, if I were to do them over, would have some additional subfloor bracing/support. Anyway, the net result is that when I started experimenting with sub placement, I found that I was getting pretty good results when I moved it closer to the wall (pretty much as close to the corner as possible on the back ~ 1 inch on the side). I also ended up getting a Rythmic D15SE-XLR (Brian now owe's ntrain yet another beer ) for my theater, so today I was able to some initial comparisons. The (current) bottom line is that to me the ultra-12 sounds pretty damn good. It has no problem filling my reasonably large room with controlled and musical bass. I did a couple a/b comparisons with the rhythmic and I was really happy with both. I don't think the u12 has quite the "punch" & accuracy of the d15, but for half the price I can say that I'm really happy with my purchase & wouldn't hesitate recommending it. Anyway, those are my current thoughts...

Elwicksto, did you do the A/B comparison with the two subs side by side? If so were you able to reverse their position. Could you give any more info on your comparison findings as to low bass extension when you have time. Thanks. ;D

I had the u12 in the corner, and the d15 next to it.
I'll be able to do some more detailed comparisons tomorrow, assuming I still have hearing. My fiancé surprised my with black eyed peas tickets in Tacoma tonight!
